Big Little Lies and This Is Us were the big winners at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, scooping multiple prizes each.
The family comedy-drama deservingly took home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, beating Netflix’s The Crown and Stranger Things and HBO’s Game of Thrones, not to mention Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. This Is Us also took home Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, thanks to Sterling K. Brown, who saw off the triple Netflix threat of Jason Bateman in Ozark, David Harbour in Stranger Things and Bob Odenkirk in Better Call Saul, as well as Peter Dinklage in Game of Thrones.
Big Little Lies, meanwhile, bagged a double win, with Alexander Skarsgard crowned Best Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries, beating Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock and Jeff Daniels in Netflix’s Godless, and Nicole Kidman crowned Best Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries, beating both leading ladies from Feud: Bette & Joan and her own co-stars, Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern.
Netflix, though, wasn’t shut out completely, winning one of the night’s big awards, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, with Claire Foy in The Crown.
On the big screen, the growing favourites for the Oscars emerged victorious, including Gary Oldman winning Best Male Actor for Winston Churchill drama Darkest Hour and Frances McDormand winning Best Female Actor for Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri. Martin McDonagh’s film also took home Best Supporting Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Sam Rockwell, while Best Female Supporting Actor went to Alison Janney for I, Tonya, seemingly ending hopes of Mary J. Blige winning for her turn in Netflix’s Mudbound.
