Roku takes on Chromecast with screen mirroring

Roku is taking on Chromecast with a new screen mirroring feature.
The feature, now being rolled out in beta release, will allow “a select number of Windows 8.1 and Android devices” to mirror videos, apps, web sites and more on their TV screen via a Roku 3 box or Roku Streaming Stick.
The feature was one of the stand-out selling points of Google’s streaming stick, which encourages innovative and creative uses of the connection between mobile devices and televisions. While Chromecast also stole the streaming show with its low launch price, though, Roku still has a larger library of apps. With this announcement, Roku is fighting back, as the streaming media device sector becomes increasingly competitive.
“Screen mirroring is one of the simplest ways to share any type of content with those around you, and you won’t need additional apps or software,” says Lloyd Klarke, Director of Product Management.
“All you’ll need is a compatible device with mirroring capabilities. Once you turn on mirroring for your phone, tablet or laptop, you can pair with your compatible Roku player and whatever you see on your mobile device is exactly what will be displayed on your TV.
The new feature is the latest step Roku has taken to connect small screens and big in the living room. The Play On Roku feature within the Roku mobile app lets users send music, photos and videos to their telly. Netflix and YouTube mobile apps on devices also support the Chromecast-like mirroring feature for Roku 3 and Roku Streaming Stick owners.
The beta release is expected to be available to all customers within the next few weeks.
