What’s leaving Netflix UK in January / February 2019?
David Farnor | On 18, Jan 2019
It’s hard to believe that we’re already halfway through the first month of 2019, but nothing reminds you of the rapid passing of time like the inevitable removal of films and TV shows from your favourite subscription platform as the end of a month looms. This January, that means it’s time to bid farewell to football-based laughs, stylish anime action and a classic slice of gothic horror. This is your last chance to stream the following:
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – 19th January
Tina Fey and Margot Robbie are on winning form in this comedy/drama about a news reporter who takes on a daring new assignment in Afghanistan.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula – 26th January
Gary Oldman is enjoying himself enormously in Francis Ford Coppola’s take on Bram Stoker’s timeless horror tale.
Elle – 1st February
Isabelle Huppert delivers a fantastic, committed performance in Paul Verhoeven’s provocative psychological thriller.
Touch of Evil – 1st February
Orson Welles’ 1958 classic isn’t just a technical masterpiece, but a dark slice of thrilling noir to boot, featuring an explosive opening scene (shot in one take) that is worth watching for alone.
Wasteland – 1st February
Luke Treadaway, Iwan Rheon and Matthew Lewis are among the brilliant young Brits starring in this pressure cooker drama about a young man recently released from prison.
Williams – 1st February
X+Y director Morgan Matthews turns his hand to documentary with this portrait of the Williams F1 team, which steers between family history and professional drive.
Attack on Titan – No longer being removed
Hajime Isayama’s dark fantasy of a small community of humans terrorised by cruel flesh-eating titans is grim but fascinating viewing. (Read more)
The League – 7th February
Who knew fantasy football could be the basis of a funny TV comedy? The League did – and even for UK viewers, it works.
La La Land – 8th February
Damien Chazelle’s bittersweet Hollywood romance, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, is a toe-tapping delight.
Side Effects – 8th February
Steven Soderbergh addictive, entertaining thriller should come with its own warning label.
Zero Dark Thirty – 8th February
Kathryn Bigelow’s account of the black ops mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden across 10 years was controversial when first released, but the director plays her even hand cooly throughout. However you choose to read its depiction of events, this is absolutely gripping.
Fury – 9th February
Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf star in David Ayer’s war movie, which puts you head-first into the claustrophobic environment of a tank – a confined space that forces men to bond, as they all undergo the same adrenaline-fuelled urge to survive.
