What’s leaving Netflix UK in April / May 2019?
David Farnor | On 13, Apr 2019
Easter is coming, and that means an extra long weekend to binge some box sets – and, in the case of this April, it’s a chance to catch up on some of ITV’s top dramas before they depart Netflix UK, including moving true crime series Little Boy Blue and age-old comedy-drama Cold Feet.
From British comedy to one of the best biopics ever put on celluloid, this is your last chance to stream the following:
What We Did on Our Holiday – 17th April
Rosamund Pike and David Tennant are on charming form in this underrated, Outnumbered-esque comedy about a troubled couple, who try to put on a happy face while visiting family in the Scottish Highlands – but their three children innocently reveal all of their biggest secrets.
Jackie – 19th April
Natalie Portman is on award-worthy form in this deliciously unconventional biopic of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who fights through grief and trauma following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband’s legacy.
Nashville (1975) – 26th April
Robert Altman’s wonderful musical satire about people involved in Tennessee’s country music scene is guaranteed to get your toe tapping.
Cold Feet – 30th April
After ITV’s successful revival of the hit drama, don’t miss the chance to go back to the very beginning and hang out with James Nesbitt, Helen Baxendale, John Thomson, Fay Ripley, Robert Bathurst and Hermione Norris.
Little Boy Blue – 30th April
Jeff Pope’s sensitive true crime drama explores the murder of an innocent child amid a wave of gang violence. The child in question? 11-year-old Rhys Jones, who was shot in a car park on the way to football practice. We learn about the murder at the same time as mother Melanie (Sinead Keenan), and the drama doesn’t let up from there, gently teasing out the impact of Rhys’ death in moving fashion. Stephen Graham is superb as DS Dave Kelly, who leads the police investigation.
Seven – 30th April
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are on superb form as two detectives hunting a serial killer bumping people off via the Seven Deadly Sins, in what may be David Fincher’s darkest – and perhaps even best – film.
The Pink Panther (1963) – 30th April
Slapstick doesn’t come much funnier than Inspector Clouseau. Originally intended as vehicle for David Niven, playing a suave jewel thief, Peter Sellers’ bumbling detective steals the show entirely in Blake Edwards’ 1963 comedy. The animated opening credits, accompanied by Henry Mancini’s timeless music, are a bonus.
Jim: The James Foley Story – 30th April
This personal tribute to American journalist James Foley, who was beheaded by Islamic State militants in 2014, rescues a man’s life from the narrative his killers imposed upon him.
In a Valley of Violence – 30th April
Ti West tackles the Western with entertaining, if uneven, results.
Children of Men – 30th April
Alfonso Cuaron’s remarkable dystopian sci-fi, starring Clive Owen, only feels more relevant 12 years after it was released.
Stake Land – 6th May
Jim Mickle’s take on vampires is suitably idiosyncratic, creating a post-apocalyptic story that’s as much about character as it is scares.
Rogue One – 10th May
Rogue One is the least Star Wars of all the Star Wars films to date – and that’s a good thing.
Taxi Driver – 10th May
Robert De Niro stars as Travis Bickle, an unstable Vietnam war veteran working as cabbie in New York, where the sleazy nightlife drives him to try and save a young prostitute (Jodie Foster). Scorsese’s iconic tracking shot highlights the violence of Bickle’s mind, but it’s Bernard Herrmann’s soundtrack that gives the film its power, as a mournful sax sings notes of false romance and redemption – and true alienation.
