What’s leaving Netflix UK in April / May 2016?
David Farnor | On 23, Apr 2016
As April escapes our clutches like a slippery, elusive analogy, and a stretched metaphor runs out of steam sooner than expected, you suddenly notice that it’s almost May and you’re nearly halfway through another year.
That traumatic realisation, though, is nothing compared to the monthly agony of seeing titles on Netflix UK ripped away from you, as their streaming rights expire. This time, though, you can rest easy, as April’s list of departures is surprisingly small and relatively painless – unless you really, really like Tim Allen and dogs. Oh, and pretty much every Disney movie you ever loved as a child. Yes, almost half a year after Disney launched its own subscription platform (Disney Life) in the UK and Sky and Disney extended their multi-year deal, a whole heap of House of Mouse favourites are departing Netflix.
This is your last chance to stream the following:
Rabbit Hole – 29th April
Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play a couple whose son is hit by a car. Their lives are torn apart: the dog gets kicked out; the house becomes a shrine to the past; and marital conversation turns to awkward silence. James Cameron Mitchell’s exploration of their loss makes for an intense 91 minutes, but surprising laughs, a distinct lack of scenery chewing and a brief turn from Miles Teller make this a heart-rending study of bereavement. You’ll be moved, but you’ll never feel manipulated.
Down Terrace – 30th April
A Brighton mob family try to smoke out the informant responsible for putting their son in the slammer. Of course, as the stakes are raised and the walls start closing in, it’s only a matter of time before they turn on their own.
Wheatley’s debut film is a micro-budget marvel about domestic gangsterism in middle England. Filmed in a matter of days for the cost of a packet of fags, Down Terrace does so much with very little. It’s the Argos Sopranos. Bad decisions and the banality of violence given a Pound Shop twist.
Pulp Fiction – 30th April
Quentin Tarantino’s second film is considered by many to be his best. The fact that this description could simply be a list of quotes is testament to just how witty, intelligent and, despite its many imitators, instantly recognisable it is.
Disney Movies – 2nd May
Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Up, The Aristocats. The lists goes on. Prepare to bid farewell to, essentially, all your childhood Disney favourites (a full list is below).
Calvary – 10th May
“Killing a priest on a Sunday. That’ll be a good one.” That’s an unknown congregation member to Father James (Brendan Gleeson) one day in the confession box. Told he has one week to get his house in order, the priest finds himself facing death – for the price of other people’s sins. Blackly funny and movingly sincere, the result is a powerful story of a decent man coming to terms with his own mortality. Killing a bad priest? That’s nothing. Killing a good priest? That really does stay with you.
The Raid 2 – 10th May
This overblown sequel fails to live up to the taut, tense original, but it does boast one of cinema’s greatest car chases.
Caesar Must Die – 12th May
Directed by Paulo and Vittorio Taviani, Caesar Must Die is Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before. Starring a host of prisoners, it follows the rehearsals for an in-house production of Julius Caesar. Why? Why not? Is there a better fit for Shakespeare’s backstabbing Rome than behind bars?
Computer Chess – 12th May
Who are we? What’s it all about? And can anyone find the ice machine? These are just a few of the questions hot-wired into Andrew Bujalski’s lo-fi baffle ballad Computer Chess. It’s smart, funny, weird – and so naturalistic it’s practically free range. More than worth a rook. Ahem. Read our full review
