What films and TV shows are leaving NOW TV / Sky in January 2016?
David Farnor | On 20, Jan 2016
NOW users are set for a tough start to the year, as they have to bid farewell to a range of classic films and shows.
NOW Cinema Membership subscribers (£9.99 a month) will lose Lawrence of Arabia, Before Sunset, Die Hard and the underrated Her, while Entertainment Membership subscribers (£6.99 a month), are running out of time to catch up with 24, True Blood, Inside Amy Schumer and Entourage.
24: Season 8 – 31st January
Set 18 months after season 7, this final outing for Jack Bauer in the new-fangled CTU headquarters (complete with Katee Sackhoff and Freddie Prinze, Jr.) sees Keifer Sutherland’s worryingly unstable agent trying to thwart assassination threats against the US President and the President of the fictional Republic of Kamistan. Anil Kapoor is a guest star, bringing an added sense of class to proceedings.
Entourage: Season 1 to 7- 31st January
You’ve only got a couple of weeks left to hang out with HBO’s four longtime friends from Queens, who are living the life in Hollywood.
Inside Amy Schumer : Season 1 and 2 – 1st February
The comedian’s hilarious series is required viewing if you’ve never seen it. (Seven things you should know about Amy Schumer.)
True Blood: Season 1 to 7 – 9th February
True Blood follows Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic barmaid living in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, whose life is turned upside down when a vampire (Stephen Moyer) walks into her life and introduces her to a strange new supernatural world.
Based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, the Golden Globe-nominated series is created by American Beauty’s Alan Ball and finally reached the end of its run in September 2014. Still haven’t caught up? This is your final opportunity.
24: Season 1 to 7 – 13th February
The other chapters in the Jack Bauer saga make their departure, taking with them some of the most entertainingly dubious US foreign policies ever caught on screen.
Movies
Aladdin – 21st January
Known the world over as a panto, this Disney version of the old Arabian Nights tale is arguably the best, as a diamond-in-the-rough street rat takes on the evil sorcerer Jafar and tries to win the hand of Princess Jasmine. Alan Menken’s songs are superb and the animation is lovely, but the show is stolen by Robin Williams as the big blue genie. You never had a friend like him.
Die Hard – 21st January
Now I have machine gun. Ho. Ho. Ho. If Alan Rickman doing German and Bruce Willis doing Bruce Willis doesn’t do it for you, we don’t know what to say. This genre-defining blockbuster delivered explosions, laughs, one heck of an underdog romp and – what makes it such a classic festive favourite – an oddly sweet tale of one man trying to get to his family for the holidays. Watch it now and remember Rickman’s game-changing contribution to on-screen villains.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Extended) – 22nd January
The first entry in the boy wizard franchise is hardly the strongest, but if you’re a fan and you’ve never seen the extended version, this is well worth a watch – especially if you still need to introduce the kids to JK. Rowling’s magical world.
Star Wars: Rebels and The Clone Wars
Sky and Disney recently signed a deal for the exclusive streaming rights to the whole of the Star Wars saga. While the movies remain available for streaming, though, the animated series Rebels (Seasons 1 and 2) and The Clone Wars (Seasons 1 and 5) will be removed at the end of January. A bunch of bonus content (featurettes) relating the movies will also be removed on the same day.
Training Day – 31st January
Antoine Fuqua and David Ayer’s Oscar-winning thriller stars Denzel Washington as a rogue detective who take a rookie (Ethan Hawke) under his wing for a 24-hour crash course in LA policing.
Lawrence of Arabia – 31st January
David Lean’s 1962 historical epic based on the life of T. E. Lawrence is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Before Sunset – 31st January
Nine years after they first met, Jesse and Celine reunite for the second in Richard Linklater’s masterful romantic trilogy.
The Lost Boys – 31st January
Joel Schumacher’s 1980s flick about a group of teenage vampires trying to recruit a new member is a genre classic.
Her – 18th February
Spike Jonze’s superb drama about a man (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his operating system (Scarlett Johansson) is a near flawless study of loneliness, romance and technology in the modern age. Funny, tragic and completely consuming.
