Netflix is taking UK cinemas Over the Moon this October, with its new animated film screening theatrically before it hits the streaming service.

Directed by the Oscar winner Glen Keane and written by Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give), the film’s behind-the-camera talent is as impressive as its voice cast, which includes Ken Jeong, Sandra Oh and John Cho.

The film follows a bright young girl who, fuelled by determination and a passion for science, builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary Moon Goddess. There she ends up on an unexpected quest, and discovers a whimsical land of fantastical creatures.

The movie hits cinemas on Friday 16th October and will be released on Netflix worldwide on 23rd October.

Even with the coronavirus pandemic ongoing – and with distributors delaying the big blockbusters that cinemas need to bring back those who feel safe going to theatres – the big chains of Odeon, Vue and Cineworld still refuse to show Netflix films as they break the traditional theatrical window. That means you won’t find Over the Moon in multiplexes, but Netflix, after being petitioned by independent cinemas last year, has expanded its range beyond its initial partner of Curzon Cinemas to debut its titles in an array of venues.
