Chappie is out now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital platforms in the UK. The film, which is made by District 9’s Neill Blomkamp, reunites the the director with Sharlto Copley, who plays the titular sentient robot – created by Dev Patel’s Deon Wilson.
The most striking characters on screen, though, aren’t the robot or even Hugh Jackman’s macho rival, but the gangsters Chappie is kidnapped by halfway through the film: Yolandi and Amerika. The pair are played by Yolandi Visser and Jose Pablo Cantillo of South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for “The Answer”).
How did they get cast? What was it like to move from music to acting in a sci-fi film? And what did they bring to the movie?
To celebrate the film’s home entertainment release, we’ve got an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from Chappie, which reveals the influence and involvement of the Die Antwoord in Chappie. For our full review of the film, head this way.
