Pee-wee Herman is back – and he’s going head to head with Daredevil this March.
Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, Netflix’s newest original film, will be released on Friday 18th March, the same day as Matt Murdock returns to face off against The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2.
The movie sees Herman inspired to take his first ever holiday after a “fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger”. But he’s still up to his old tricks, as the first trailer for the film reveals his love of domestic gizmos and gadgets hasn’t faded – the last time Herman had a feature-length outing was 1985’s Pee-wee Big Adventure, directed by Tim Burton, which featured a breakfast-making Rube Goldberg machine to rival Wallace and Gromit.
Judd Apatow and star Paul Reubens, who worked together to bring the project to fruition, produced Netflix’s film from a script by Reubens and Paul Rust (Comedy Bang! Bang!, Arrested Development). John Lee makes his feature debut as director, after helming Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer for the small screen.
“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos last year, when the movie’s production was first announced.
