“My name is Chelsea Handler and I’m as white as they come.” That’s the sound of Chelsea Handler tackling the subject of white privileged in her new Netflix documentary.
Called Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea, it marks the return of the comedian and TV presenter to Netflix, after the cancellation of her short-lived talk show. In this documentary, Handler explores how white privilege impacts American culture and the ways it’s benefited her own life and career.
It follows her as she confronts and explores her personal and cultural privilege, travelling around the country speaking with a wide range of people on the topic of race. Her interviewees include fellow comedians Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, and W. Kamau Bell, anti-racism writer and activist Tim Wise, a Republican women’s group in Orange County, CA, college students at an open mic night, and her former high school boyfriend in New Jersey.
The result premieres on Netflix on Friday 13th September. Here’s the trailer:
Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
