There will be a Game of Thrones movie – without George RR Martin

There will be a Game of Thrones movie, according to George RR Martin.
Speaking to The Daily Star, the author of the fantasy series revealed that HBO will be making a feature-length outing based on the books. Rather than continue or conclude the TV show, though, as some have speculated in the past, the Game of Thrones movie will be a standalone tale.
Indeed, despite the show’s huge popularity, there are no plans to extend it in any way beyond the planned finale, writer David Benioff told the paper: “No way in hell because we know what the end is and we’re rapidly approaching it.”
The comments came at the HBO afterparty, following the show’s record win of 12 Emmys. Martin said that Benioff and co-writer DB Weiss will be in charge of the HBO movie, noting that he has “too much to do”.
“I have two more books to finish,” he explained. “The pressure is on. I am such a slow writer and the fans get upset that I don’t write faster.”
Rather than continue on the story after the show, something Martin would probably be more keen to have a say in, one source claimed that HBO could instead delve back into the mythology of the series, not unlike the Star Wars “anthology” movies that are currently in development.
“With the Game Of Thrones universe there is much rich material and no constraints on when that story will take place,” said the insider.
“They are looking at dipping back in time during certain periods of the series, which could be examined as a one off plot. That means that some of the big characters who fans have seen die on screen could be resurrected.”
Then, of course, there are the characters who haven’t even appeared in the show. With over 8,000 years of history and thousands of pages to choose from, they certainly wouldn’t be short of material.
The news arrives just as Game of Thrones Seasons 2 to 4 return to Sky as an on-demand box set – and, for non-Sky customers, land on NOW for streaming. Still need to catch up from the start? See our guide to where you can watch Game of Thrones online.
