The Umbrella Academy opens up again on Netflix this weekend, and you can now get a glimpse of Season 2 with some of its opening scene now released online.
Five warned his family that using his powers to escape the apocalypse was risky. Well, he was right – Season 2 picks up as their time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which – spoiler alert! – turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline. Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins.
Based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics, the show is exec-produced by showrunner Steve Blackman and returns to Netflix on 31st July.

Watch: New trailer for The Umbrella Academy Season 2
8th July 2020
“What the hell did we do now?” That’s the sound of The Umbrella Academy returning for Season 2, and a new trailer gives us a first proper look at its gang of super-powered oddballs back in action.
Based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics, the series follows the seven children who were adopted by a billionaire who created The Umbrella Academy and prepared them to save the world. Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and work together to solve the mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family began to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
Season 2 picks up as the time jump-ing finale of Season 1 scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three-year period. Starting in 1960. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday with 10 days to stop the end of the world. Cue an awkward reunion, more timeline-meddling, some playfully filmed corridor showdowns and a guy with a fish tank for a hand. It’s all in a day’s work for The Umbrella Academy, which returns on 31st July.
Here’s the impressive, darkly funny, confident new trailer:
The Umbrella Academy: First look and plot revealed for Season 2
17th June 2020
The Umbrella Academy returns for Season 2 this July, and we’ve now got our first look at the show’s second run.
Based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics, the show follows the seven children who were adopted by a billionaire who created The Umbrella Academy and prepared them to save the world. Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. Season 2 picks up as the time jump-ing finale of Season 1 scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three-year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?).
Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything.
Season 2 premieres on Netflix on 31st July. Here are the first images:

The Umbrella Academy: Netflix drops time-bending posters for Season 2
25th February 2020
When will The Umbrella Academy Season 2 return to Netflix? Before we can begin to answer that, the streamer’s comic book series has another question to consider: when are its characters in the first place?
Netflix’s series, based on the Dark Horse Comics run from writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá, brings a dark twist to the superhero genre. It follows a group of children who were all inexplicably born on the same day in 1989 and later adopted by a billionaire to create a team of super-powered children, called The Umbrella Academy. The six surviving members reunited in Season 1, upon the news of their father’s passing, and worked together to solve a mystery surrounding his death – and prevent a global apocalypse.
Season 1 concluded with Five using his time travel powers, but where exactly have the members of the Academy ended up? The new posters for the show’s return tease a 1960s-style time-bending answer, with trippy artwork featuring Luther aka Number One (Tom Hopper), Diego aka Number Two (David Castañeda), Allison aka Number Three (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus aka Number Four (Robert Sheehan), Number Five and Ben aka Number Six (Justin Min).
Joining them for Season 2 will be Ritu Arya (Humans) as Lila, a chameleon, Yusuf Gatewood (Good Omens) as Raymond, a charismatic leader who can disarm people with a look, and Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man) as Sissy, a fearless Texan.

Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland join The Umbrella Academy Season 2
12th September 2019
Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood and Marin Ireland have joined the cast of The Umbrella Academy for Season 2.
With Netflix having cancelled its Marvel series, the show is ideally placed to build a new superhero franchise all its own. And so, within a couple of months of its debut, the streaming giant swiftly renewed it for a sophomore run.
Returning for Season 2 will be the main cast, including Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin H. Min. Now, they’ve got some co-stars ready to join then.
Ritu Arya (Humans) will play Lila, a chameleon who can be as brilliant or as insane as the situation requires. Yusuf Gatewood (Good Omens) will play Raymond, a charismatic leader who can disarm people with a look. Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man) will play Sissy, a fearless Texan who married young for all the wrong reasons.
Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) will return as showrunner and executive producer for Season 2, with Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg executive producing, alongside co-EPs Way and Bá.
Netflix renews The Umbrella Academy for Season 2
2nd April 2019
Netflix has renewed The Umbrella Academy for a second season.
The series, based on the Dark Horse Comics run written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, brings a dark twist to the superhero genre, in a way that’s no doubt designed to fill the void left by Netflix cancelling its group of Marvel series. As a result, it’s no surprise that within months of its debut, Netflix has got a franchise in its sights, ordering a sophomore run for the show.
It follows a group of children who were all inexplicably born on the same day in 1989 and later adopted by a billionaire to create a team of super-powered children, called The Umbrella Academy. The six surviving members reunited in Season 2, upon the news of their father’s passing, and worked together to solve a mystery surrounding his death – and prevent a global apocalypse.
“Subtle, it might not be, but it’s certainly never boring,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Now, the group are reteaming once again for a second season to continue the story. The cast set to reprise their roles include Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin Min. Season 2 will again be produced by UCP for Netflix, with Steve Blackman returning as executive producer and showrunner, and additional EPs returning including Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Gerard Way, and Gabriel Bá. Additional casting news for Season 2 will be announced at a later date.
Season 2 will span 10 episodes, with production beginning this summer in Toronto.

Kate Walsh enrols in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy
9th May 2018
13 Reasons Why’s Kate Walsh has enrolled in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy.
Based on the award-winning Dark Horse Comics series of the same name – created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá – The Umbrella Academy is a live action series that follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (Luther, Diego, Allison, Vanya, Klaus and Number Five) as they work together to solve their adoptive father’s mysterious death, while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.
Walsh is set for the recurring role of The Handler, a composed and confident leader of a mysterious, bureaucratic company. She’s always ready to manage any situation, big or small, but it’s best not to get on her bad side. That said, her charm is her greatest strength, and she uses it to her full advantage to complete the business of her organisation.
Walsh joins previously announced cast members Elliot Page, Mary J. Blige, Tom Hopper, Cameron Britton, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Adam Godley, Aidan Gallagher, David Castañeda. John Magaro, Ashley Madekwe, and Colm Feore.
The Umbrella Academy is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) serves as executive producer and showrunner, with additional executive producers Bluegrass Television and Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment. Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá serve as co-executive producers.
Cameron Britton leads new recruits to The Umbrella Academy
17th February 2018
Mindhunter’s Cameron Britton is leading a class of new recruits to Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy.
Created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, the Eisner-winning comics follow the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes – The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror, and The White Violin – as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death, while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the alternate and twisted take on the superhero genre is being adapted into a series by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist TV series), who wrote the pilot, and Steve Blackman (Fargo), who will serve as showrunner.
The show stars an impressive line-up of talent, including Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, Rmmy Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and – just announced this week – Mary J. Blige.
Now, the Academy’s class is getting bigger, with Cameron Britton enrolling. Britton, who shot to fame last year with his role as Ed Kemper in Netflix’s Mindhunter, will play Hazel, an assassin who is described as “infamously ruthless an efficient” by Deadline. A loyal company man with decades of travelling through time to pick off targets, he’s tiring of the job, which puts him at odds with Mary J. Blige’s fellow assassin, Cha-Cha.
Britton’s joined by House of Cards’ Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreeves, the billionaire and inventor who adopted the seven children born with supernatural abilities; Revenge’s Ashley Madekwe as Detective Patch, a fast-rising police officer solving a string of crimes in the city and unsympathetic to vigilante heroes; and Breaking Bad’s Adam Godley, who will play Pogo, a “genetically engineered, tweed jacket-wearing, talking chimpanzee”. A trusted companion to Hargreeves, he’s also a beloved member of the family, helping to keep the orphaned siblings together. Pogo will be a voiceover/motion-capture, according to Deadline, a sign of how big Netflix is thinking for the series.
Mary J Blige joins Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy
13th February 2018
Mary J Blige has joined Netflix’s upcoming The Umbrella Academy series.
Blige has signed a one-year deal with the streaming giant to play the regular role of Cha-Cha, described as a “ruthless and unorthodox hotwoman” who travels through time to kill her targets. Sadistic and sociopathic, she’s a “pain artist” who only really cares for her partner, Hazel. It marks Blige’s first major, regular TV role, after guest starring in shows such as Empire and Black-ish. It also marks a reunion with Netflix, after starring in the streaming service’s Mudbound, which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, plus another for the Best Original Song Mighty River, which she co-wrote.
She joins a cast that includes Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, Rmmy Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher.
Tom Hopper joins Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy

Published by Dark Horse Comics, the alternate and twisted take on the superhero genre is being adapted into a series by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist TV series), who wrote the pilot, and Steve Blackman (Fargo), who will serve as showrunner.
Elliot Page has already signed on to star, but now, Netflix is rounding out the family, with Tom Hopper leading the arrivals. Hopper, who repeatedly impressed as Billy Bones in Black Sails and recently appeared as Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones, will play Luther, who was groomed by his father from an early age to be the leader of The Umbrella Academy – a responsibility that has always weighed heavily on him – and has the ability of heightened physical strength.
Emmy Raver-Lampman will play Allison, a beautiful, elegant former movie star who possesses the power of suggestion – anything she says aloud comes to pass. The breakout star of the 1st National Touring Company of Hamilton, this is her first TV role.
David Castañeda (We Are Unsatistifed) will play Diego, a skilled, intense vigilante who has a real problem with authority. Castañeda was recently seen in indie film El Chicano and will appear in Sicario sequel Soldado.
Robert Sheehan (Genius) will play Klaus, a drug addict and lovable mess of a human being, who is seemingly everyone’s friend, but will rob you blind without thinking twice. He will next be seen in Mute on Netflix, the second part of a planned trilogy from Moon and Looper director Duncan Jones.
Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) will play Number Five, who appears to be a 13-year-old boy, but in actuality he is a 58-year-old man trapped in the body of a child.
