“The game is changing…” “We need to decide what the truth is.” “This is a battle for the soul of the universe!” That’s the sound of The Morning Show returning this September, and a new trailer gives us a closer look at Season 2.
Starring and executive produced by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, the drama explores the world of morning news and the ego, ambition and the misguided search for power behind the people who help America wake up in the morning. Season 1 followed the free fall of an early morning newscast in the wake of a harassment scandal involving veteran host Mitch (Steve Carell), leading co-host Alex (Aniston) and new presenter Bradley (Witherspoon) to navigate their way through the mess.
Season 2 picks up as the Morning Show team emerge from the wreckage of Alex (Aniston) and Bradley’s (Witherspoon) actions to a new UBA and a world in flux, where identity is everything and the chasm between who we present as and who we really are comes into play. Along with Aniston and Witherspoon, the star-studded returning cast includes Steve Carell, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Bel Powley, Desean Terry, Janina Gavankar, Tom Irwin and Marcia Gay Harden.
Joining the cast for Season 2 are Greta Lee as Stella Bak, a tech world wunderkind who has joined the UBA executive team; Ruairi O’Connor as Ty Fitzgerald, a smart and charismatic YouTube star; Hasan Minhaj as Eric Nomani, a new member of the Morning Show team; Emmy Award-winner Holland Taylor as Cybil Richards, the savvy chairwoman of the UBA board; Tara Karsian as Gayle Berman, a news producer; Valeria Golino as Paola Lambruschini, a documentary filmmaker; Julianna Margulies as Laura Peterson, a UBA news anchor; and, revealed for the first time in this trailer, Will Arnett as Doug Klassen, Alex’s agent.
You can see them in all in action on 17th September, when Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+. Here’s the trailer:

The Morning Show Season 2 “in rewrites”
29th July 2020
The Morning Show Season 2 is undergoing rewrites, star Mark Duplass has revealed.
The cutthroat drama stars and is executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. It explores the world of morning news and the ego, ambition and the misguided search for power behind the people who help America wake up in the morning. The series follows the free fall of an early morning newscast in the wake of a harassment scandal involving veteran host Mitch (Steve Carell), leading co-host Alex (Aniston) and new presenter Bradley (Witherspoon) to navigate their way through the mess.
“Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon shine in Apple TV+’s witty and entertaining newsroom drama,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Duplass plays Chip Black, the EP of the series, leading a supporting cast that includes Billy Crudup as Cory Ellison, the forward-thinking president of the network’s news division and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Hannah Shoenfeld, the head booker of talent.
The show was greenlit by Amazon with two seasons already on the scorecard, but Season 2 has since been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with production currently on hiatus. Duplass, who has been nominated for an Emmy – one of eight nods for the show – has revealed that the show is using that time to undergo rewrites.
Why? To reflect the bigger picture of life during the current pandemic-struck climate. They did the same thing in Season 1, he explained to Deadline.
“We shot two episodes before we shut down due to the pandemic,” he said, “but I know that they’re also rewriting, which is crazy because that’s what happened in the first season. They had a whole set of scripts [then] and they rewrote everything to include the #MeToo movement, and now we’ve got other, larger, global phenomenon to deal with. I don’t know what they’re doing but I know they’re rewriting.”
Duplass is one of eight Emmy nods for the show, although Witherspoon, Mbatha-Raw, Karen Pittman and Desean Terry were not among the nominees.
“I’m bummed about Reese, I’m bummed about Karen Pittman, I’m bummed about Gugu and I’m bummed about Desean Terry,” added Duplass. “I’m bummed about all of my scene partners. They all put in great performances. Some of them are flashier and some of them talked more for certain reasons, and I know it sounds cliché, but the truth is, to single them out is sort of a crazy process.”
As for Chip’s own story, Duplass says he’s interested in what will happen next: “Chip sees himself as not having done enough and I think it’s really important that we all look at ourselves the way Chip looked at himself… I think if you’re going to tell a white man’s story right now, I think it’s a really interesting one to tell. I’m interested in what’s going to happen to Chip in Season 2, because… he loses that power.”
