The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 has finally got an official UK date, and the good news is that it’s much sooner than expected.

Hulu’s TV series, based on Margaret Atwood’s seminal novel of the same name, is set in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarised ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a desperate attempt to repopulate the world.

Season 3 will be driven by June’s resistance to the dystopian regime of Gilead and her struggle to strike back against overwhelming odds. Startling reunions, betrayals, and a journey to the terrifying heart of Gilead force all characters to take a stand, guided by one defiant prayer: Blessed be the fight.

While Season 1 and 2 both took their time to arrive on British shores, though, fans don’t have to wait long to catch up with the third season. It premieres in the US on 5th June, and it’s only four short days until it hits UK screens, with Channel 4 to debut the new season on Sunday 9th June.

“Today, more women will go to work than ever before in our country’s history.” That’s the sound of The Handmaid’s Tale returning for a third season, and a new teaser give us a glimpse of the fire and retribution to come.

Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarised ‘return to traditional values’. Moss is joined by Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, and Amanda Brugel. The series is created for television by Bruce Miller, who serves as the series’ showrunner, with Moss among its exec-producers.

After its Season 1 debut in 2017, the show has become a veritable TV sensation, becoming the first series ever on a streaming service to take both the Golden Globe and Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, and sparking debate with its hauntingly topical themes and subjects, despite being based on a book written decades ago. Season 2 proved more divisive, as it extended Offred’s suffering for another 13 episodes, while teasing the looming revolt. Season 3, though, promises that rebellion is upon us, as Offred urges America to wake up, and handmaids line up, like an army, in front of the Washington Monument, which is shaped like a cross.

There’s no air date yet for the US, but you can expect it to be broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK, most likely a couple of months after its spring American release. Watch this space for more on the third season’s reason – until then, here’s the trailer:

 

The Handmaid’s Tale renewed for Season 3

The Handmaid’s Tale has already been renewed for Season 3, just a few weeks after its Season 2 premiere.

Since its premiere in April 2017, The Handmaid’s Tale has gone on to become the first series ever on a streaming video on-demand service to take both the Golden Globe and Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. The result is an eight-time Emmy Award-winning drama series and has garnered more than 30 prestigious awards to date, including a 2018 Peabody Award.

This year, that run is only looking set to continue, as Season 2 doubled its audience on Hulu to reach a record-breaking premiere. Now, Hulu has already has announced that the show has been green-lit for another season, with Atwood to serve as a co-executive producer on the third run.

The news arrives as the UK is waiting on Channel 4 to announced when The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 will be shown in the UK. With an expected broadcast of May, it should be any day now that the broadcaster confirms the exact release date, but with Season 1 not arriving on UK soil until 28th May 2017, the end of the month is looking likely.
