Trailer: The Great Season 2 set for December UK debut

Huzzah! The Great will officially be back on our screens this December, and a new trailer gives us a closer look at Season 2.
From the writer of The Favourite, Tony McNamara, The Great is a satirical series about the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Season 1 is a fictionalised, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter.
The second season will once again star Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, with the previously announced Gillian Anderson to guest star in two episodes as Catherine’s mother. It sees Catherine finally take the Russian throne for her own — but she will quickly learn that dethroning her husband was just the beginning. Catherine must now face the realities of liberating a country that doesn’t want to be free. Her fight to bring enlightenment to Russia will mean battling her own court and those closest to her, including her own mother She will also battle her own heart as she continues to navigate her relationship with Peter. Ultimately, Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming Great will ask more of her than she could have imagined.
Season 2 will premiere on 5th December on STARZPLAY UK, with episodes arriving weekly. Here’s the trailer:

“Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult are flawless in this hilarious satirical comedy,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
The show was renewed by Hulu within a couple of months of its debut last year and, with Star (the adult-friendly section of Disney+) not yet launched, the show instead found its UK TV home exclusively on STARZPLAY – with Channel 4 holding the linear second run rights. That means you can expect Season 2 to arrive on STARZPLAY in the UK shortly after its US premiere, which is set for 19th November.
With Catherine pregnant with her first child – and Gillian Anderson joining the cast as Catherine’s mother, Johanna – expect lots of hilarious tension to ensue. Here’s the first teaser to give you a taste:
The Great is available on STARZPLAY, as part of a £4.99 monthly subscription.
