Israel’s submission for this year’s Foreign Language Oscar race is heading to Netflix.
Written and directed by Elite Zexer, Sand Storm comes with some strong credentials: the film premiered at Sundance this year, where it won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize and has just walking away with prizes at the Ophir Awards (Israel’s equivalent of the Oscars).
The film has already a theatrical release in the US, but now, it’s been snapped up by Netflix for international release. The movie takes place in a Bedouin village, where Jalila finds herself hosting her husband’s marriage to a second, younger wife. During the festivities, she discovers her daughter is involved in a forbidden relationship with a boy from university, but while she tries to contain the news, her daughter dreams of autonomy.
If nominated for an Oscar, it will join a growing line of Academy Award nominees for Netflix, including The Square and Virunga. It premieres on Netflix on Friday 15th December.
