Sales of Game of Thrones soar on blinkbox
Digital sales of Game of Thrones have soared on blinkbox following the release of Season 4.
HBO made the latest season of Game of Thrones available to download immediately following the finale’s broadcast on Sky Atlantic on a range of pay-per-view services. Tesco’s digital video service has been front and centre of activity with a promotion giving away 1,000 Tesco Clubcard points and a free 10” Finest pizza with every purchase of the new series. Clubcard points can be transferred into vouchers to spend with Tesco online, in-store, online or on fuel. Pizza can be eaten.
As a result, transactions have surged 60 per cent compared to the first week of Season 3’s release online last year, when it was available exclusively on blinkbox. Seasons 1 to 3 have also enjoyed a boost in sales, with downloads up 47 per cent.
Tesco have also recently extended their digital media presence into books top, which appears to be paying off: since the launch of the TV series on 17 June, all seven of the novels by George RR Martin have taken the top spots in their sales chart.
The retailer has also launched a novel marketing campaign, including a re-enactment of Game of Thrones featuring pugs as key characters.
blinkbox COO Adrian Letts attributes the rise in downloads to the sheer amount of hype that now surrounds the programme.
He comments: “The buzz around Game of Thrones this year has reached fever pitch and that’s translating into sales. At blinkbox we are passionate about offering a brilliant entertainment experience for customers and the combination of the latest titles with attractive offers powered by our relationship with Tesco is a great formula.”
Game of Thrones seasons 1-4 are priced at £16.99 in SD and £23.99 in HD on blinkbox Movies and TV. The Clubcard points offer on blinkbox Movies and TV runs until 31st July 2014. The pizza offer, which emails a voucher to be printed out and redeemed at Tesco, runs up 3rd August 2014.
