Ryan Reynolds is heading back to Netflix to star in Dragon’s Lair.
The film will be based on the 1983 Laserdisc video game of the same name. Originally an arcade game, it follows Dirk the Daring, a knight trying to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe, who has trapped the princess in the castle of evil wizard Mordroc.
A hit, it spawned a sequel in the 1990s and was turned into an animated series in the 1980s, with a comic book series also running in 2003. In 2016, a crowdfunding campaign raised enough money for a teaser of an animated movie based on the franchise. Now, a Dragon’s Lair movie is officially a go.
The live-action movie is in development at Netflix, with Reynolds in talks to play Dirk. Reynolds would also produce through his Maximum Effort banner, alongside Roy Lee (Vertigo Enertainment) and Trevor Engelson (Underground Films), as well as Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy of the original game. Dan and Kevin Hageman, whose CVs include The LEGO Movie, are attached to write the screenplay.
Reynolds, of course, is no stranger to Netflix, having starred in Michael Bay’s actioner 6 Underground for the streamer. He will soon be seen in Netflix’s Red Notice, opposite Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson.
