Amazon has confirmed that Outlander will arrive on Amazon Prime in March – and released a trailer to boot.
The smash hit US show, filmed in Scotland, features a British and Irish cast and is based on the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon.
The series, which won this year’s People’s Choice Award for Favourite Cable Sci Fi/Fantasy TV Show, follows the story of Claire, a married World War II nurse who is thrown back in time from 1945 into an unknown world, set in 1743.
Breakthrough star Caitriona Balfe (Now You See Me, Escape Plan and Super 8) plays Claire, who falls for soldier Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). The pair are joined by Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones) as Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit) as Dougal MacKenzie, Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot) as Colum MacKenzie, Lotte Verbeek (The Fault in our Stars) as Geillis Duncan, Duncan Lacroix (Vikings) as Murtagh Fitzgibbons, Stephen Walters (Batman Begins) as Angus Mhor and Annette Badland (Eastenders) as Mrs Fitz.
The deal with Sony Pictures Television is announced by Amazon on the first anniversary of its Prime Instant Video launch in the UK – a year that has seen the VOD service resurrect Ripper Street for a third season, become the first online show to win the Golden Globe for Best TV Series with Transparent, secure the exclusive rights for US shows such as Vikings and Black Sails, commission Woody Allen to make his first TV series and debut an increasingly impressive array of original pilots.
There are now more than 15,000 popular movies and TV episodes available for unlimited streaming on Prime, Which Amazon says makes it “the UK’s largest subscription streaming selection”. The latest addition to that line-up is Bosch, Amazon’s new detective series, which is now the most-watched Amazon Original series in its opening weekend, with already more than 700 customer reviews averaging at 4.8 out of 5 stars.
“In the last year we have launched some fantastic shows for our customers, what better way to celebrate our first anniversary than by bringing the gripping first series of Outlander exclusively to our millions of UK Prime members,” said Jay Marine, Vice President of Amazon Instant Video in the EU.
Outlander premiered in the US last August, with eight episodes broadcast on Starz. All of those episodes will be available on Amazon Prime in the UK from Thursday 26th March. The remaining episodes will then be released weekly on Amazon Prime Instant Video in April, when the show resumes in the US. Starting Sunday 5th April, new episodes will be added every Sunday, within 24 hours of their original broadcast.
Amazon Prime Instant Video has also secured the rights to further seasons, with the second set to start filming this summer.
