The nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards have been unveiled, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is leading the pack – and making history while it’s doing it.

The period vampire musical horror has racked up a record-breaking 16 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. That places Sinners not only ahead of the rest of the year’s contenders, but ahead of any film in history – the previous record for the most Oscar nominations is 14, held by La La Land, Titanic and All About Eve.

In second place is Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another with 13 nominations, ahead of Marty Supreme, Frankenstein and Sentimental Value, which all have nine nominations apiece, and Hamnet, which has eight nominations.

This year marks a new category for casting, with nominees including many of the frontrunners, such as Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners and The Secret Agent. Sentimental Value is a surprising omission from the category, given the film’s full clutch of casting nods, while Paul Mescal surprisingly got overlooked for Best Actor, despite Hamnet’s casting nod.

Another surprising absentee was Wicked: For Good, which received no nominations at all, while F1: The Movie instead became a surprising contender for Best Picture.

Netflix will be pleased with its raft of 16 nominations, including for Frankenstein, KPop Demon Hunters and Train Dreams – the latter an underdog for Best Picture. Apple TV+ boasts six nominations, thanks to not only F1: The Movie but also The Lost Bus and Come See Me in the Good Light. MUBI, meanwhile, has had another strong year with 15 nominations across three films: The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and It Was Just an Accident.
