Joker, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are leading the 2020 Oscar nominees in what is shaping up to be a very familiar year of awards contenders.

Joker leads the pack with 11 nods, ahead of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’s 10, with Quentin Tarantino’s movie joined by The Irishman and 1917. Parasite follows with six nominations, joint with Marriage Story and Little Women. With no female helmers nominated for Best Director and only one non-white performer nominated in the acting categories – Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, making this year’s Oscars slightly more diverse than the BAFTAs – the result is a line-up that feels extremely, lamentably predictable.

Beneath the surface, though, there is one major disruption to the awards race (and no, it’s not Joker): Netflix is, for the first time, currently winning with a record 24 nominations. That’s up from 17 last year. It includes nods for Martin Scorsese and The Irishman for Best Director and Best Picture, but also sees Netflix dominating some categories, such as supporting actor, with several contenders all up for the prize. Indeed, Marriage Story is doing well in the acting categories – and has also received a nomination for Best Picture – picture, and The Two Popes has followed its BAFTA nominations with more nods here. More surprising, though, is that Netflix also has two animated feature films in contention – Klaus and I Lost My Body – as well as American Factory up for the documentary feature prize.

Snubs include Eddie Murphy for Dolemite Is My Name and Greta Gerwig for Best Director – Little Women is up for Adapted Screenplay and has multiple acting nods – as well as performers such as Lupita Nyong’o and Awkwafina. However, with Parasite making history as the first South Korean film nominated for Best International Film – not to mention Best Picture and Bong Joon-ho for Best Director – there are some things to celebrate.

Whether Netflix will be celebrating on the big night is yet to be seen – at the Golden Globes it converted its 34 nominations into only 2 wins, with 1 of those for a film. But with Amazon Studios only boasting one nomination – Les Miserables for Best International Film – the impact the streaming giant has had upon Hollywood is clear to see.
