The Orange Is the New Black Season 2 trailer has been revealed by Netflix, along with its release date of Friday 6th June.
The Netflix Original series, which premiered last summer, fast established itself as a success to rival House of Cards. Indeed, when Netflix announced its figures for the third quarter of 2013, it said that the prison comedy-drama – based on the memoir by Piper Kerman – would be the most popular original programme on the Internet TV service by the end of the year.
Written by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, the show follows engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex (Laura Prepon) resulted in her arrest and year-long detention in a federal penitentiary. Trading her comfortable New York life with fiancé Larry (Jason Biggs) for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture, the show impressed because it managed to not just be about her. Developing and fleshing out her fellow inmates, the show became an ensemble piece full of colourful characters – Uzo Aduba’s Crazy Eyes, who is obsessively in love with Piper, easily stealing the show.
Season 2 of Orange Is the New Black will be released all-at-once on Netflix UK (and all other territories around the world) on Friday 6th June 2014.
“Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we’re eager to get a second season to our viewers,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix.
“I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence,” said series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan.
