Old Vic to stream Jekyll and Hyde this August

The Old Vic Theatre will stream its production of Jekyll and Hyde for free this August.
The dance thriller, devised, directed and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie, is inspired by Robert Louis Stevensons The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
One of the UK’s most innovative theatre choreographers, McOne reimagined the classic drama as a physical production in 2016, as part of the Old Vic’s collaboration with The McOnie Company. Accompanied by music from Grant Olding, it was performed in May that year to positive acclaim.
Now, it’s the latest production to be streamed from the theatre’s back catalogue.
With venues closed across the UK due to the lockdown, the National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre, Hampstead Theatre and more have been streaming recordings of past productions online to bring culture to living rooms and raise money for the arts during a financially challenging time. The Old Vic has joined the club in recent months, streaming both A Monster Calls and Joe Penhall’s Mood Music. It’s also streaming new productions for paid audiences live from its empty theatre, with Andrew Scott currently performing the play Three Kings, which was written especially for him to perform online.
Jekyll and Hide will go live on Wednesday 5th August at 7pm on the Old Vic’s YouTube channel and will be available until 7pm on 12th August. Here’s a teaser:

“The music industry isn’t about healing heartbreak and vulnerability. It’s about selling it.” Behind its seductive and glamorous veneer, the music industry has a dark side. Whether it’s bitter legal battles fought by the likes of George Michael, Kesha and Tulisa, or the lost lives of Amy Winehouse and Chris Cornell, the price of fame and success can be brutal.
In a top London recording studio, Cat, a young songwriter, her producer Bernard, their lawyers and psychotherapists go to battle over who owns a hit song. Amidst a gathering storm of bitter complaints and recriminations Cat and Bernard inflict a devastating toll on each other.
Roger Michell’s production of Joe Penhall’s play had its world premiere in 2018, marking the theatre’s 200th birthday.
The production, featuring the original cast, will go live at 7pm on Wednesday 8th July and will be available to watch until Tuesday 14th July.
The release follows the Old Vic’s socially distanced performances of Lungs by Claire Foy and Matt Smith, the tickets for which were released this week. You can find out more about that production, streaming live on several days from the empty theatre, here.
Old Vic to stream A Monster Calls online
31st May 2020
The Old Vic is the latest theatre to be turning to the web to keep audiences entertaining during the coronavirus pandemic. With venues closed across the UK due to the lockdown, the National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre, Hampstead Theatre and more have been streaming recordings of past productions online to bring culture to living rooms and raise money for the arts during a financially challenging time.
Now, the Old Vic is bringing a selection of archive recordings from the past five years – since Matthew Warchus became artistic director – to YouTube for free. The Old Vic Our Shows Screenings are supported by Royal Bank of Canada and PwC. First up will be Patrick Ness’s piercing novel A Monster Calls, which was brought to The Old Vic stage in a powerful adaptation directed by Sally Cookson.
13-year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved to America. But now his mum’s very sick and she’s not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye. Then, one night, at seven minutes past midnight, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking. It’s come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears.
A Monster Calls will premiere online at 7pm on Friday 5th June, with the play then available to stream for seven days.
A selection of full length Old Vic archive recordings of selected productions since Matthew Warchus became Artistic Director in 2015 will be hosted for free on The Old Vic’s YouTube channel.
