Andrew Lincoln will star in the Old Vic Theatre’s online production of A Christmas Carol

Matthew Warchus’ big-hearted, smash hit production of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic first premiered back in 2017, starring Rhys Ifans as Ebenezer Scrooge. Since then, it has been revived twice, once starring Stephen Tompkinson in 2018 and again the following year starring Paterson Joseph. It was no surprise, then, that the Old Vic announced earlier this year that it would return once more – but since then, the entire theatre industry has been upended by the coronavirus pandemic.

With the Old Vic pioneering a steady run of live-streamed productions, it’s now taking its In Camera series into festive gear with a special version of Jack Thorne’s take on the classic story.

Leading the show will be Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) as Ebenezer Scrooge. He will be joined by Melissa Allan as Little Fan, Rosanna Bates as Jess, John Dagleish Bob Cratchit, Tim van Eyken as Nicolas, Sam Lathwood as Ferdy, Eugene McCoy as Fred, Myra McFadyen as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Gloria Obianyo as Belle, Maria Omakinwa as Mrs Cratchit, Clive Rowe as Fezziwig, Samuel Townsend as Young Ebenezer and George, Golda Rosheuvel as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Mrs Fezziwig and Michael Rouse as Father and Marley.

The production will be live-streamed from the Old Vic stage from 12th to 24th December. Tickets will be available for up to 1,000 people to watch per night, replicating the capacity of the usual theatre audience. Prices range from the Old Vic’s usual £10 to £65 to allow for a range of contributions from viewers – although each “seat” will have the same view. All performances will offer audio description and captioning.

Tickets go on sale on Monday 9th November.

 

Old Vic to stream A Christmas Carol online

The Old Vic Theatre will stream its production of A Christmas Carol online this December.

Since then, it has been revived twice, once starring Stephen Tompkinson in 2018 and again the following year starring Paterson Joseph. It was no surprise, then, that the Old Vic announced earlier this year that it would return once more – but since then, the entire theatre industry has been upended by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Old Vic has responded by producing a string of online productions, which stream via Zoom and are performed in its empty auditorium by a small number of actors. The latest in this Old Vic: In Camera series will see Scrooge once again be met by three spirits in Jack Thorne’s wittily written adaptation.

Casting is yet to be announced, but the Old Vic has confirmed that it will run from 12th to 24th December. Tickets will be available for up to 1,000 people to watch per night, replicating the capacity of the usual theatre audience.
