Tom Hanks heads to Netflix this month for News of the World, and a new trailer gives us a first proper look at the new film.
Directed by Paul Greengrass and based on Paulette Jiles’ bestselling book, it follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), a veteran of three wars. He agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.
The movie premieres on Netflix UK on 10th February. Here’s the trailer:
Trailer: Netflix to release News of the World on 10th February
23rd January 2021
Netflix will release News of the World on 10th February, and a new trailer gives us a fresh look at the Western.
The film, which is based on Paulette Jiles’ bestselling book, reunites director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks after their work on Captain Phillips. The film is co-written by Greengrass and Luke Davies, who also worked on Captain Phillips.
Acquired by Netflix from Universal last year, the film sees Hanks play Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), a veteran of three wars. Five years after the end of the Civil War, he moves from town to town as a non-fiction storyteller, sharing the news of presidents and queens, glorious feuds, devastating catastrophes and gripping adventures from the far reaches of the globe.
In the plains of Texas, he crosses paths with Johanna (Helena Zengel, System Crasher), a 10-year-old taken in by the Kiowa people six years earlier and raised as one of their own. Johanna, hostile to a world she’s never experienced, is being returned to her biological aunt and uncle against her will.
Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says she belongs. As they travel hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness, the two will face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces as they search for a place that either can call home.
The film will be released by Netflix on 10th February. Here’s the new trailer:

News of the World: Netflix to nab Tom Hanks film for international release
12th November 2020
Netflix is set to nab the international rights to News of the World, the new film from Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks.
The film, which is based on Paulette Jiles’ bestselling book, is co-written by Greengrass and Luke Davies, who also worked with Greengrass and Hanks on Captain Phillips. The film sees Hanks play Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a widower and veteran of three wars. Five years after the end of the Civil War, he moves from town to town as a non-fiction storyteller, sharing the news of presidents and queens, glorious feuds, devastating catastrophes, and gripping adventures from the far reaches of the globe. In the plains of Texas, he crosses paths with Johanna (Helena Zengel), a 10-year-old taken in by the Kiowa people six years earlier and raised as one of their own. Johanna, hostile to a world she’s never experienced, is being returned to her biological aunt and uncle against her will. Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says she belongs. As they travel hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness, the two will face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces.
The film is still set for a cinema release in the US this year, following the deal earlier this year between distributor Universal and cinema chain AMC, which will let the studio release the movie on premium VOD as early as 17 days after its theatrical debut, with AMC getting a share of the digital revenue – a deal that, surprisingly, has not been replicated by other distributors and exhibitors in this uncertain new entertainment landscape.
Indeed, with no deal in place between Universal and other chains overseas, the company is instead reportedly in talks with Netflix to release it online internationally through the streaming platform. Netflix, for its part, has done similar deals in the past on films such as the recent Shaft flick. Greengrass, meanwhile, is no stranger to Netflix, having released his previous film, 22 July, on the streamer worldwide.
Expect word shortly on the exact release details, with the movie likely to drop online in early 2021.
