Netflix has cancelled Away after one season.
From Executive Producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights), the space drama celebrates the incredible advancements humans can achieve and the personal costs they face along the way. Hilary Swank stars as American astronaut Emma Green, who is preparing to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars. But she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most.
Created by Andrew Hinderaker, the series is executive produced by showrunner Jessica Goldberg, Jason Katims, Matt Reeves, Andrew Hinderaker, Edward Zwick, Hilary Swank, Adam Kassan and Jeni Mulein.
“Netflix’s open-hearted space voyage is a winningly old-school ensemble drama,” we wrote in our review.
Its old-school charms weren’t quite winning enough, however, as a month on from its release, Deadline has reported that Away will not lift off for a second voyage.

Netflix is heading Away this September for its new sci-fi drama starring Hilary Swank – and a new trailer gives us our first look at the show.
In the near future, a crewed spacecraft is sent to Mars. For this high-stakes mission, a team of elite astronauts are assembled from around the globe. They hail from the United States, Russia, China, India, and Great Britain. If all goes well, they will be away from the place they call home and the people they love for three years. During this time, their relationships both on Earth and in space will be tested, as they struggle to stay alive and stay on track in pursuit of humanity’s most important goal. The world will be watching.
Loosely inspired by the Chris Jones article from Esquire, which documented renowned astronaut Scott Kelly’s mission to space, it is created by Andrew Hinderaker, who wrote the first episode, and boasts Friday Night Lights’ Jason Katims as writer and exec-producer and The Path’s Jessica Goldberg as showrunner.
