It’s not long now until Jeremy Saulnier’s new film, Hold the Dark, arrives on Netflix, and the streaming giant has given us a first look at the thriller in action with a gripping trailer.
Based on William Giraldi’s novel of the same name, and adapted by Macon Blair, the film sees retired naturalist and wolf expert Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright) journeys to the edge of civilization in northern Alaska at the pleading of Medora Slone (Riley Keough), a young mother whose son was killed by a pack of wolves. As Core attempts to help Medora track down the wolves who took her son, a strange and dangerous relationship develops between the two lonely souls.
But when Medora’s husband Vernon (Alexander Skarsgard) returns home from the Iraq War, the news of his child’s death ignites a violent chain of events. As local cop, Donald Marium (James Badge Dale), races to stop Vernon’s vengeful rampage, Core is forced on a perilous odyssey into the heart of darkness.

Netflix and Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier team up for Hold the Dark
28th January 2017
Netflix is teaming up with Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier for its next original film.
Called Hold the Dark, the movie, which follows his brutal 2016 thriller starring Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart, is set in Alaska and based on William Giraldi’s novel of the same name. Macon Blair will be the one on writing duties, a name that will be familiar to fans of Saulnier’s work: Blair previously starred in Blue Ruin, and then went on to appear in Green Room.
The project marks a reunion for Netflix too: Macon Blair’s directorial debut, I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore, premiered at Sundance Film Festival this month, before the streaming giant snapped up the rights to the movie. It will arrive on Netflix on 24th February. Saulnier, meanwhile, is no stranger to the online service either: Green Room is already available on Netflix.
Hold the Dark will follow a wildlife naturalist, who goes to a remote village to investigate the murder of a young boy by a wolf. While there, he becomes involved in a dangerous triangle with the boy’s grieving parents.
The project, which is Saulnier’s fourth feature, is produced by Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder and Eva Maria Daniels. Production on the movie begins on 27th February in Alberta.
