MUBI Library: MUBI introduces new streaming archive
VOD News | On 21, May 2020
MUBI has opened up its streaming archive for the first time with a new section called Library.
The subscription streaming service has always placed an emphasis on curation and collection, bringing together a rolling carousel of films from the around the world available for 30 days at a time. Now, it’s letting subscribers revisit and discover films that have previously been hand-picked and left that carousel, with more than 100 archive titles available to subscribers as part of MUBI’s standard £9.99 monthly subscription.
MUBI Library comprises past exclusive releases, previous retrospectives, double-bills and other exclusives. In the UK, that means the opportunity to stream Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, Kantemir Balagov’s Cannes prizewinner Beanpole, Juliano Dornelles & Kleber Mendonça Filho’s acclaimed siege thriller Bacurau, Jospehine Decker’s energetic Madeline’s Madeline and masterpieces from Jean-Luc Godard, Dario Argento, Satyajit Ray, Chantel Akerman, Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni among others.
It’s a big step for MUBI into territory more aligned with Netflix or BFI Player’s sizeable streaming catalogues, at a time when people staying at home are looking for quantity of entertainment as well as quality – a notable advantage that streamers with larger back catalogues have over fledgling VOD contenders such as Apple TV+. And, with MUBI Go (which offers a free cinema ticket every week at participating venues for a specific film) unable to operate at present, it’s a move that adds more value to a MUBI subscription.
The Library sits alongside MUBI’s Now Showing section, which continues to introduce a new film every day. It will come to MUBI’s Apple and Android apps in the near future, but is currently available on the web at mubi.com/library.
