Golden Globes 2021: The Power of the Dog rides out in front
David Farnor | On 10, Jan 2022
Netflix’s The Power of the Dog was the big winner at last night’s Golden Globes awards.
The Western, directed by Jane Campion, went into the night with seven nominations, tied with Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast. It went on to pick up Best Picture (Drama), Best Director for Campion and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee.
Netflix also enjoyed success with Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) going to Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick… Boom! – and, on the TV side of things, Best Supporting Actor going to O Yeong-Su for Squid Game.
Amazon Studios took home a pair of awards: Best Actress (Drama) for Nicole Kidman in Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos and Best Limited Series for Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad.
Otherwise, it was a good night for HBO, with Succession dominating the small screen prizes, including Best Drama, Best Actor for Jeremy Strong and Best Supporting Actress for Sarah Snook. Mare of Easttown won Best Actress in a Limited Series for Kate Winslet.
Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso scored Best Comedy Actor for Jason Sudeikis, while Disney+ Star’s Dopesick won Best Actor in a Limited Series for Michael Keaton. The most significant win of the evening, though, went to MK Rodriguez, who became the first trans woman to win Best Actress for the final season of the groundbreaking Pose.
That win was all the more striking because of the issues surrounding diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body that decides on the awards each year. This year, after much scrutiny over both diversity and other practises that might influence voting, NBC terminated its contract with the awards body, which meant the ceremony was not broadcast at all on TV in the USA. Instead, the event unfolded with no stars or audience in attendance. Here’s the list of winners:

Golden Globes 2021: The Power of the Dog leads nominees
13th December 2021
The 2021 Golden Globe nominees have been announced, and The Power of the Dog is leading the pack, with seven nominations – the same as Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast.
The awards have long been the subject of criticism due to the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body that decides on the awards each year. This year, after much scrutiny led to NBC terminating its contract with the awards body, the ceremony will not be broadcast at all on TV in the USA.
Nonetheless, the HFPA has announced its nominees once again, and regardless of the awards’ validity, they again highlight the strides Netflix is making in becoming a recognised Hollywood player, with Jane Campion’s Western nominated for best director, screenplay and film (drama). Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, a disaster movie satire from Adam McKay, is nominated for four awards, including best film (comedy or musical), while the streamer’s The Lost Daughter has two nominations for director Maggie Gyllenhaal and star Olivia Colman, Tick, tick… Boom! has a nomination for best film (musical or comedy) and star Andrew Garfield, and Passing has a supporting actress nomination for Ruth Negga. Paulo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God, which is released on Netflix this month, is nominated for best film (foreign language).
Netflix is also a dominant player in the TV field, with four nods for Maid, 3 for Squid Game, 2 Lupin and 1 for Halston. But HBO is the leader of the pack, with 5 nods for Succession, plus 1 for White Lotus and 2 for Mare of Easttown.
The newcomer of the pack, Apple TV+, continues to be a plucky contender, with Ted Lasso picking up 4 nods, including best TV series (comedy), the same number given to The Morning Show, which is up for best TV series (drama). Disney+, meanwhile, has 3 nods apiece for Dopesick and Only Murders in the Building, while WandaVision has 2 nominations for best actor and actress.
Amazon is again relatively near the back of the TV pack, with just one nomination for The Underground Railroad.
The winners will be announced on 9th January. Here’s the full list of contenders:
