Game Night’s Mark Perez to pen Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego

Game Night scribe Mark Perez has been hired to write Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego movie.
The classic 1990s series, which spanned a computer game and TV cartoon, was snapped up by Netflix last year. The streaming giant has doubled down on the rights, not only bringing the iconic character back as an animated series – set for release in 2019 – but also a live-action movie. The movie already has Gina Rodriguez attached to voice the lead, with the actress also producing it through her I Can and I Will productions, alongside Misher Films’ Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser. (It marks a reunion between Rodriguez and Misher Films, after the latter produced the Miss Bala remake that stars Gina and will drop next year.)
While no director has yet been attached, and no details of the intended tone or plot have been detailed, the hiring of Perez gives us a hint at what Netflix is planning for Carmen’s feature film outing: Perez is fresh from penning Game Night, a studio comedy starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, that has grossed over $100 million at the box office this year. With 2006 college comedy Accepted also on his CV, you can expect this new incarnation of Carmen Sandiego to have a sense of humour.
Gina Rodriguez to star in live-action Carmen Sandiego Netflix movie

Gina Rodriguez is adding another Carmen Sandiego project to her CV.
The Jane the Virgin star was first revealed as the new Carmen Sandiego last year, teaming up with Finn Wolfhard to voice the globe-trotting thief, who is the leader of VILE, a criminal organisation that is hunted by the ACME Detective Agency.
An educational computer game series designed to teach kids geography, history and more, it spawned a cartoon in the 1990s called Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?. In 2017, Netflix announced plans to bring back the iconic character, with an animated series giving us a serialised look at Carmen’s back-story.
Produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Carmen Sandiego promised a new crop of international capers packed with thrilling adventure and intrigue, with an intimate look into Carmen’s past where viewers will not only follow her escapades but also learn who in the world is Carmen Sandiego and why she became a super thief.
Now, Rodriguez and Netflix are reportedly teaming up once again to make a new Carmen Sandiego adaptation – this time, a live-action movie.
Rodriguez will star as Carmen and produce the movie under her I Can and I Will Productions banner, alongside producers Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser. It will be executive produced by Andy Berman of Misher Films, although no writer or director has yet been attached.
The animated series, meanwhile, will be released in 2019. Rodriguez is not short of things to do, though, with another Netflix project – the romantic comedy Someone Great – also in the pipeline, not to mention more episodes of Jane the Virgin.
