Charlize Theron is heading back into Mad Max territory with The Old Guard, Netflix’s new blockbuster that promises big action from an equally big cast.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka, it follows a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, the group must eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.
Theron stars as lead warrior Andy, alongside Kiki Layne as the group’s newest recruit, Nile. They’re joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harry Melling and Matthias Schoenaerts. You can see them all in action on 10th July, when the film premieres on Netflix worldwide. Until then, here’s the new trailer:

That’s the premise behind Beyond the Lights director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s new film, and with a cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harry Melling and Matthias Schoenaerts plus an acclaimed graphic novel as its source material, The Old Guard is shaping up to be a promising action thriller. The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron, officially hits Netflix this July, and new images give us our first look at the action film.
Based on the comic book series created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, it follows a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die. Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), they have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetise their power by any means necessary.
The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), and promises a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks. Joining Theron and Layne are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harry Melling and Matthias Schoenaerts.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harry Melling are among the latest additions to Netflix’s The Old Guard.
Based on the comic book series created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, the film was announced earlier this year. It tells the story of a small covert group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed.
Rucka is co-writing the project with Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond The Lights), with Prince-Bythewood also directing.
The project has wasted no time in racking up an impressive cast, including Charlize Theron (also producing) and Matthias Schoenaerts. Now, another set of starry names have been added to the list: Academy Award Nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harry Melling have signed on to co-star. The pair are no strangers to Netflix, with Ejiofor’s directorial debut The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind released by the streaming service at the start of the year, and Melling co-starring with Liam Neeson in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. They will be joined by Veronica Ngo, who also starred in Netflix blockbuster Bright. Other previous announced cast members include KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli.
The movie is currently filming in the UK.
Matthias Schoenaerts to star in Netflix’s The Old Guard

Matthias Schoenaerts will star in Netflix’s new original film, The Old Guard.
Based on the comic book series created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, the project was announced earlier this year. It tells the story of a small covert group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed.
Rucka is co-writing the project with Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond The Lights), with Prince-Bythewood also directing. Now they’ve found the next two talents to bring the script to life in front of the camera, with Schoenaerts (Red Sparrow, The Mustang) and Luca Marinelli (Don’t be Bad, They Call Me Jeeg) joining the previously announced Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne and Marwan Kenzari.
Hailing from Skydance Media, the movie is produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, plus Marc Evans and Charlize Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix for Denver and Delilah. Rucka and Stan Wlodkowski are exec producers.
Gina Prince-Bythewood to direct The Old Guard for Netflix

Netflix has boarded The Old Guard, the latest project from Gina Prince-Bythewood.
The Love & Basketball and Beyond The Lights director will helm the adaptation of the comic book series created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández.
The Old Guard tells the story of a small covert group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed.
Written by Rucka, the Skydance Media production is produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, with Charlize Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix producing for Denver and Delilah, alongside Marc Evans. Stan Wlodkowski is on board as an Executive Producer.
Theron (Tully, Atomic Blonde) will also star in the movie, opposite KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk, Native Son).
