No high lasts forever, warns the new trailer for Narcos: Mexico Season 2.
The spin-off series is testament to that, as Netflix decided after several seasons to stop its narcotics thriller focused on Colombia in favour of a new story across the border.
There, the show reaches new heights as we met Diego Luna’s Félix Gallardo, who took the helm of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s and began to build an empire. Michael Peña co-starred in Season 1 as Kiki Camarena, the DEA agent trying to bring him down. The end of Season 1, though, saw a secret member of the cast unveiled: Scoot McNairy as DEA agent Walt Breslin, the show’s narrator throughout the season.
He takes over DEA duties for Season 2, with the two going head-to-head – and judging by the new trailer, the show’s high is set to last for some time to come. All episodes of Season 2 premiere on Netflix on 13th February 2020.

“What happened in Guadalajara in the early ’80s was the beginning,” his narrator declared at the end of the season. “Spun out of control. It was that moment when it all fell apart.”
“[McNairy’s introduction] is just the continuing revolving doors of, ‘Here comes the new guy and this time we’re going to get it right,'” showrunner Eric Newman told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve now seen that with agents Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Pena (Pedro Pascal) in seasons one and two, Pena alone in season three… and now a new guy, who is basically going to come down and probably get nothing done and the cycle will continue. Of course, if we do continue, that’s something we could explore.”

As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.
“Luna and Peña bring a grounded weight to their parts in this sculpted version of history, which lends this patient thriller a classy tone more reminiscent of The Godfather than Brian De Palma’s Pacino-fest,” we wrote in our review of Season 1. “In the background of every scene, a low-level guy keeps popping up called Chapo, teasing the generations of gun-toting, drug-dealing and law-avoiding to come. Narcos: Mexico sees Netflix’s series rebuilding its empire – long may it continue.”
Now, Netflix has announced that the story will continue for another season. Here’s the video announcing the renewal. Not seen Narcos: Mexico? Read why you should catch up here.

First look: Michael Peña and Diego Luna in Narcos: Mexico
18th July 2018
Narcos returns to Netflix this year, but not as we know it: Diego Luna and Michael Peña will star in Narcos: Mexico, a new original series that takes the drug-trafficking thriller to new territory.
The spin-off series, originally thought to be a more straightforward Season 4, will launch as a new Netflix original show, the anthology-like approach following the drugs and the money onto Mexican soil, leaving behind Colombia, where the show spent three seasons. Narcos: Mexico will explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganised confederation of independent growers and dealers.
Diego Luna will star as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna), who takes the helm of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. Michael Peña will co-star as DEA agent Kiki Camarena, who moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, but quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined. As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.
Camarena is a family man who garnered valuable intel undercover through a series of informants around Félix and his newly minted Guadalajara cartel, but quickly found he had completely underestimated the sophistication of Gallardo’s system. Gallardo, meanwhile, is more than a match for Pablo Escobar’s shoes: one of the biggest narcos in the history of Mexico, he’s the founder of the modern Mexican drug trade – quiet but bold, inscrutable but sharp-minded, to all appearances a benevolent leader and loyal to his friends, associates, and employees… but his ambition comes before all else.
Now, we’ve got our first look at both of them in character, paving the way for a thriller of two opposable forces on a path of collision.
The duo will be joined by Aaron Staton (Mad Men) as Butch Sears; Alejandro Edda (Fear the Walking Dead) as Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman; Alfonso Dosal (Hazlo como hombre) as Benjamin Arellano Felix; Alyssa Diaz (Ray Donovan, The Rookie) as Mika Camarena; Clark Freeman (We Go On) as Ed Heath; Ernesto Alterio (Cable Girls) as Salvador Osuna Nava; Fermín Martinez (Lady of Steel) as Juan Jose Esparragoza Moreno (“El Azul”); Fernanda Urrejola (Bala Loca) as Maria Elvira; Gerardo Taracena (Apocalypto) as Pablo Acosta; Gorka Lasaosa (Brain Drain) as Hector Palma; Guillermo Villegas (Sin Nombre) as Sammy Alvarez; Horacio Garcia Rojas (Texas Rising) as Tomas Morlet; Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Little Children) as Jim Ferguson; Joaquín Cosío (Quantum of Solace) as Don Neto (Ernesto-Fonseca Carillo); José María Yazpik (Narcos) reprises his role as Amado Carrillo Fuentes; Lenny Jacobson (Nurse Jackie) as Roger Knapp; Manuel Masalva (Mi corazón es tuyo) as Ramon Arellano Felix; Matt Letscher (Scandal, The Flash) as James Kuykendall; Tenoch Huerta (Sin Nombre) as Rafael Caro Quintero; Teresa Ruiz (Here on Earth) as Isabella Bautista; Tessa Ia (The Burning Plain) as Sofia Conesa ; Yul Vazquez (The Looming Tower, Magic City) as John Gavin.
Eric Newman is Executive Producer and showrunner for the series, with José Padilha, Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard on board as Executive Producers. Narcos: Mexico will launch on Netflix later this year.
