Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have assembled an international cast including Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lasser, among others. Emily Beecham to star in Netflix’s 1899
19th December 2020
Emily Beecham will star in Netflix series 1899.
The original series, which was announced in 2018, hails from Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the creators of the first German Netflix original series Dark, who have an overall deal in place with Netflix.
The eight-part show revolves around a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent from London to New York. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, are united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. When they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.
Friese and bo Odar said: “What really made us connect to this idea was the concept of having a truly European show with a mixed cast from different countries. At its heart is the question of what unites us and what divides us. And how fear can be a trigger for the latter.”
Now, after bo Odar has posted camera and costume tests on Instagram in recent weeks – as well as a script cover for Episode 1, titled The Ship, Deadline has revealed that Emily Beecham has signed on to star in the project. The Daphne and Into the Badlands star recently appeared in Little Joe and will soon be seen in Disney’s Cruella.
Filming on 1899 will take place in the spring.
