Channel 4, All 4 lead Edinburgh TV Awards winners
David Farnor | On 21, Oct 2021
Channel 4 was the big winner at this year’s Edinburgh TV Awards, with We Are Lady Parts, It’s a Sin and All 4 all taking home prizes.
BBC One won the prestigious Channel 4 of the Year award, but Channel 4 walked away with seven of the 18 gongs awards in an online ceremony hosted by rising comedy star Kae Kurd.
Some of the UK’s most acclaimed on-screen acting and presenting talent were in virtual attendance, including Jodie Comer, who won the Variety Outstanding Achievement Award in celebration of her work, which includes Killing Eve and Help. Additional winners included Roman Kemp (Best TV Presenter), Hayley Squires (Best Drama Actor for Adult Material), O-T Fagbenle (Best Comedy Actor for Maxxx) and Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan for Best Entertainment Series (Rob and Romesh vs).
The cast of We Are Lady Parts, Channel 4’s breakout comedy hit, were presented with the Best Comedy Series award by Edinburgh TV Festival International Editor, Tan France. Broadcaster, DJ, writer and TV Foundation New Voices Award winner Yinka Bokinni, who made her on-screen debut in Channel 4 Documentary Damilola: The Boy Next Door, received this year’s Breakthrough Talent award, presented by Alesha Dixon.
In the Best Drama categories, Channel 4’s record-breaking hit It’s A Sin and Netflix’s Lupin were awarded the national and international drama accolades respectively. In the factual shortlists, American’s War on Abortion from ITV won Best Documentary and Joe Lycettedaccept the Best Popular Factual Series Award for his Channel 4 show Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back.
Production Company of the Year was awarded to Bad Wolf and presented to Jane Tranter by rising star and His Dark Materials actor, Amir Wilson, whilst Small Indie of the Year went to Hunting the Football Trolls producer Flicker Productions.
Sky Sports featuring Sky Zero took away The Green Award, and celebrating its first year as a free-to-air channel, Sky Arts won the Specialist Channel of the Year award and Channel 4’s Alex Mahon surprised All 4 with the award for Best On Demand Service.
The success for the broadcaster comes as it’s trying to get its access services up and running again after a fire-related incident several weeks ago that has disrupted its broadcasts since and left All 4 without subtitles or audio description until mid-November.
