Update: Ladhood returns to BBC Three for Season 2 on 15th August 2021
Filming is now underway on Season 2 of BBC Three’s Ladhood.
Made by BBC Studios Comedy Productions, Ladhood straddles two timelines as young adult Liam (Liam Williams) explores the roots of modern-day masculinity, by delving into the memories of his own misspent adolescence.
“The cast of characters are wonderfully drawn, exploring concepts of masculinity via bawdy laughs and a lowkey sensitivity, resulting in a more erudite version of The Inbetweeners,” we wrote in our review of the first season. “Despite appealing to the teenager in all of us, this is a grown up comedy which shows Williams really coming into his own.”
The six-part second season picks up where the first season left off and follows young Liam (Oscar Kennedy) and his best mates Ralph (Samuel Bottomley), Addy (Aqib Khan) and Craggy (Shaun Thomas) as they experience GCSE results, driving tests, break ups and their first big night out in town, making their way through all the highs and lows of teenage life in the Leeds suburb of Garforth in the early noughties.
As in Season 1, the lads’ adventures run parallel to scenes from the life of present-day Liam (played by Liam Williams) as he reflects on his teenage years and tries hard not to make the same mistakes again.
Liam Williams says: “The BBC have asked me to tell you how excited I am to be filming series two of Ladhood so it’s lucky that I am, in fact, very excited. They’ve also asked me to say a bit about what we can expect from series two, to which I’d say it’ll be like series one but all the characters are a bit older.”
Fiona Campbell, Controller BBC Three, says: “I am so excited to see Ladhood back on our screens. Liam executes the trials and tribulations that come with adolescence brilliantly, which is something the BBC Three audience resonates with so well. It’s a perfect fit, and we can’t wait for more.”
Ladhood is a BBC Studios production, produced by Joe Nunnery, directed by Jonathan Schey and executive produced by Gareth Edwards and Josh Cole. Liam Williams wrote, starred and was an executive producer on the series. Production will be following strict Covid-19 protocols, including keeping the cast in a cohort and by completing regular testing and following social distancing whenever possible.
Ladhood is available on BBC iPlayer until November 2021
BBC Three renews Ladhood for Season 2
10th February 2020
BBC Three has ordered a second season of Ladhood, the coming-of-age comedy from Liam Williams.
Adapted from the BAFTA-nominated writer, actor and comedian’s Radio 4 series, Ladhood straddles two timelines as Liam explores the roots of modern-day masculinity, by delving into the memories of his own misspent adolescence in the Leeds suburb of Garforth during the early noughties.
Across the season Liam and his best mates Ralph, Addy and Craggy go through many of the teenage rites of passage. Getting get drunk, trying drugs, ending up in fights, falling in love and falling apart.
Williams says: “I’m excited and honoured to have another chance to work with a tremendously talented cast and crew in giving my own grubby memories far more gravitas than they deserve.”
Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning, adds: “Ladhood has a terrific concept which audiences have found really engaging. Liam’s deft writing manages to both excoriate and celebrate the trials and tribulations of those formative late teen years as he traces back the roots of the person he then became in adulthood. With a superb cast and a soundtrack to boot, this keeps the BBC Three comedy flame burning brighter than ever.”
Ladhood is a BBC Studios production, produced by Joe Nunnery, directed by Jonathan Schey and executive produced by Gareth Edwards. Liam wrote, starred and was an associate producer on the series.
The six-part second season will begin filming later this year.
