BBC iPlayer has bagged the rights to all five seasons of Bates Motel.
The deal, with NBCUniversal Global Distribution, will give BBC iPlayer the full box set of the show, which aired in the US between 2013 and 2017 and previously streamed on Netflix UK.
The series is a contemporary prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’ Psycho and depicts the lives of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga). Across the five seasons, it takes a modern-day glimpse into Norman’s formative years and delves into the twisted relationship between Norman and his mother to reveal how he became one of the most infamous murderers of all time.
Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisitions, says: “Bates Motel is modern reinvention of the classic spine-tingler. Full of suspense, intrigue and unexpected twists, it will keep BBC viewers mesmerised until the very end.”
Bates Motel co-stars Nestor Carbonell, Max Thieriot and Olivia Cooke, while Carlton Cuse (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (The Morning Show, Friday Night Lights) serve as executive producers for Carlton Cuse Productions and Kerry Ehrin Productions, respectively. Tucker Gates and Vera Farmiga also serve as executive producers on the series.
The show joins a number of recent acquisitions for BBC iPlayer, including Pretty Little Liars (and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfections), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, HBO Max’s Love Life and Battlestar Galactica.
Bates Motel is available on BBC iPlayer until February 2022
