Gossip Girl reboot returns for part 2 on New Year’s Day
David Farnor | On 20, Dec 2021
The Gossip Girl reboot will return for the second half of its first season this January.
The pop culture classic, based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s book series of the same name and starring Leighton Meester amd Ed Westwick, originally ran for six seasons until its finale in 2012 – and all of those seasons arrived on BBC iPlayer in the summer, swiftly followed by the new 2021 incarnation of the series. Developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, a writer and executive producer on the original show, it explores just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years.
Starring Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith, it takes us back to the Upper East Side, where a new generation of private school teens are introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark.
The first six episodes premiered in August, arriving all at once on BBC iPlayer.
“A decidedly different beast to the iconic original, the new Gossip Girl struggles under the weight of the illustrious act it isn’t sure how to follow,” we wrote in our review.
Now, we know when the show will return with Episode 7 set to air on BBC One at 10.35pm on Tuesday 4th January 2022, with each one then airing weekly on Tuesdays in the same slot. Before then, however, all six episodes of part 2 will be released together on BBC iPlayer on New Year’s Day.

BBC iPlayer bags UK rights to Gossip Girl
2nd July 2021
The BBC has acquired the rights to the all-new Gossip Girl, as well as all previous seasons of the hit show.
The pop culture classic, based on the book series of the same name and starring Leighton Meester amd Ed Westwick, originally ran for six seasons until its finale in 2012, but it has been a perennial favourite ever since – and with good reason.
The new Gossip Girl explores just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years. It stars Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith.
Developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, a writer and executive producer on the original show, the extension of the pop culture classic takes us back to the Upper East Side finding a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark. Based on the bestselling novels by Cecily von Ziegesar and the original show, it is produced by Fake Empire and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios.
Now, it’s found a UK TV home, with BBC bagging the series to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year. BBC iPlayer will also be home to every episode of Gossip Girl so far, which means fans can dive back into the box set of all six seasons.
Dan McGolpin, Director, BBC iPlayer and Channels says: “The BBC has a rich track record of acquiring some of the best content from around the world to complement our original commissions and we are delighted to be reacquainting existing fans and introducing new viewers to the iconic world of Gossip Girl on BBC iPlayer. The original series defined an era and we cannot wait for everyone to see the new series with its exciting new generation.”
