Bad Monkey will return to Apple TV+ for a second season.
The darkly comic thriller hails from Bill Lawrence, who has become one of Apple’s key creative talents, having also created Shrinking and Ted Lasso. Now, Bad Monkey is joining Apple’s renewal club, with a second chapter officially greenlit.
Starring and executive produced by Vince Vaughn, the series is adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name. It tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), who has been bounced from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys. But after stumbling upon a case that begins with a human arm fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he’ll be back in. He just needs to get past a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey.
The ensemble cast also includes L Scott Caldwell (“The Fugitive”), Rob Delaney (“Catastrophe”), Meredith Hagner (“Search Party”), Natalie Martinez (“Ordinary Joe,” “Reminiscence”), Alex Moffat (“Saturday Night Live,” “Holidate”), Michelle Monaghan (“Gone Baby Gone”), Ronald Peet (“First Reformed”) and Jodie Turner-Smith (“Queen & Slim”), with special guest stars John Ortiz (“American Fiction”), Zach Braff (“Scrubs”), Ashley Nicole Black (“Ted Lasso”), Scott Glenn (“The Leftovers”) and Charlotte Lawrence in her television debut.
“I hope that people know that Carl Hiaasen is an idol of mine and an inspiration for me as a writer,” said showrunner and executive producer Bill Lawrence. “To get to go on telling his story with Vince Vaughn and this great cast, at least the characters who are still alive, is very exciting. I’m very thankful to our partners at Apple TV+ and Warner Bros, as well as the entire team that helps bring this show to life.”
“Since ‘Bad Monkey’ first made its debut on Apple TV+, this highly entertaining series became an instant fan favorite,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Led by the incomparable Vince Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, alongside a brilliant ensemble cast, we can’t wait for everyone to experience more hilarious, sun-soaked, beachy misadventures from the mind of Bill Lawrence as the temperature rises even further in the next chapter of this engrossing murder-mystery.”
Bad Monkey: Vince Vaughn to star in Apple TV+ drama from Bill Lawrence
10th August 2021
Vince Vaughn is heading to Apple TV+ for new series Bad Monkey.
The 10-episode drama is based on Carl Hiaasen’s bestselling 2013 novel of the same name. It tells the story of Andrew Yancy (played by Vaughn), a one-time detective demoted to restaurant inspector in Southern Florida. A severed arm found by a tourist out fishing pulls Yancy into the world of greed and corruption that decimates the land and environment in both Florida and the Bahamas. And yes, there’s a monkey.
The series is written by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs), who will executive produce through his Doozer Productions alongside Matt Tarses and Jeff Ingold. Liza Katzer will serve as co-executive producer. Vaughn will also serve as executive producer. The project hails from Warner Bros Television, where Lawrence is under an overall deal.
Apple has given a full series order, which comes hot on the heels of the Season 2 premiere of Ted Lasso, which is co-created by Lawrence and recently made history as the most Emmy-nominated freshman comedy series ever, with 20 nods in total.
