Apple TV+ orders second helping of Sugar
David Farnor | On 04, Oct 2024
Apple TV+ has ordered a second helping of Sugar, its noir thriller starring Colin Farrell.
Farrell exec-produces the thriller and plays John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he also unearths Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
The series is created by Mark Protosevich, who also executive produces, with Season 1 directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Two Popes), who also executive produces.
The eight-part first season co-starred Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Sandman), Amy Ryan (The Wire), James Cromwell (Succession), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul), Nate Corddry (Mindhunter), Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling), and Alex Hernandez (Invasion).
“Colin Farrell is enjoyably enigmatic in this slow-paced but surprising neo-noir thriller,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Following the show’s premiere in April, Apple has now greenlit a second season. Farrell will return to reprise his role.
“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season,” said executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg. “We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”
“Since its premiere, audiences have been gripped by the mysteries and twists of ‘Sugar,’ with an incredible performance by Colin Farrell at the center,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon and the entire team behind this series have brilliantly blended genres to create a compelling, can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing, and we cannot wait to see where Detective John Sugar finds himself in season two.”
Season 2 will see Sugar back in Los Angeles, taking on another missing persons case as he continues to look for answers surrounding his missing sister.
Season 2 of Sugar will be showrun by Sam Catlin, who will also executive produce under his Short Drive Entertainment banner. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films under Kinberg’s overall deal with Apple TV+. Farrell, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers.

Colin Farrell will give Apple TV+ some Sugar in a new series.
The genre-bending drama is created by Mark Protosevich (“The Cell,” “I Am Legend,” “Thor”), with Colin Farrell (“The Batman,” “True Detective,” “The Lobster”) attached to executive produce alongside Protosevich as well as star in the lead role.
The series is set to be directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Constant Gardner,” “Two Popes”), who will also serve as executive producer, and is executive produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men” films, “Deadpool” films, “The Martian”), Audrey Chon (“Invasion,” “The Twilight Zone”) and Scott Greenberg (“The Guilty”). With all that talent behind the camera and Farrell in front, the project sparked a competitive bidding war, with Apple emerging on top with the project. It joins a growing roster of star-led projects on the streaming platform, from Shining Girls, starring Elisabeth Moss, to The Essex Serpent, starring Tom Hiddleston.
