AOL On announces 16 original series including James Franco movie show

AOL has announced 16 original shows to be produced in the coming year for AOL On along with the first ever Nielsen digital ratings system.
Original content is the weapon of choice among VOD providers in the UK this year, with everyone from Yahoo to Microsoft revealing their own line-ups to rival those produced by Netflix and Amazon.
Now, AOL has confirmed its own arsenal of no less than 16 shows for its own platform, most of them non-fiction.
AOL On was launched in March and features over 750,000 premium videos – both curated and original – across 17 channels, which are distributed through a network of publishers including Trinity Mirror, Telegraph Media Group, TalkTalk, Local World, Videojug and TVGuide.co.uk.
On.AOL.co.uk is the service’s hub and already includes footage from Endemol beyond, Channel 4 News and ITN, making it the web’s largest premium, curated video library.
AOL says its slate “reaffirms its long-term commitment to creating premium shows with authentic storytelling”. Indeed, the line-up will include AOL’s first long-form series, Connected, while the company is wasting no time in the talent department: stars and producers range from Steve Buscemi, Sarah Jessica Parker and Zoe Saldana to Ellen DeGeneres. James Franco will also have his own movie-themed show.
AOL’s 16 original shows will premiere throughout the year on The AOL On Network.
The world’s first Nielsen digital ratings
In a deal that is the first of its kind, AOL also announced that it has signed on to participate in a beta that will provide TV-comparable audience measurement across all of AOL’s new series. The Nielsen beta will deliver GRPs (gross ratings points) that reflect the audience reach by age and gender for AOL’s new programming as an extension of Nielsen Digital Program Ratings, which currently measures TV-originated content viewed online.
In addition to measuring content, AOL will be tagging associated advertising using Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings; the combination of audience measurement across digital-first content and related advertising will make it possible for complete audience comparisons to TV for the first time.
“Premium content is premium content, regardless of screen, delivery, length, or format, and our relationship with Nielsen signifies that understanding,” said Ran Harnevo, President of AOL Video. “As TV and digital continue to merge into one ecosystem, we believe in one standard form of measurement, and we’re proud to be the first digital client to work with Nielsen to make this vision a reality.”
“In our experience, compelling, high-quality content always finds an audience. The key is putting in place the independent measurement that instills advertiser confidence,” said Nielsen’s Steve Hasker, President, Global Product Leadership.
The slate “continues to define AOL Originals as a premium showcase for authentic voices telling remarkable stories”, says Gabriel Lewis, head of AOL Originals.”
Here’s what we know about the 16 shows.
