Amazon has broken into the 2014 Golden Globe race, with Transparent earning the streaming service its first two award nominations for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series. The fabulous show, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as a transgender woman, was created by Jill Soloway – read our interview with her and Tambor here – who now goes head to head with Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and creator Jenji Kohan.

The series – hailed by us as the most important of 2014 – marks an equally significant landmark for TV in general, as all but one of the TV comedy nominees (Mike Judge’s Silicon Valley) in this year’s Golden Globes are run by women.

Orange has already earned its fair share of nods after its stellar first season and shows no sign of showing down. Indeed, with Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress and Best Comedy Series for Orange and Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Drama for House of Cards, Netflix has well and truly established itself as a major player in awards season.

HBO is still a force to be reckoned with, though, with Girls up for Best Comedy. Game of Thrones up for Best Drama and True Detective dominating the mini-series race (despite stiff competition from Fargo). But it’s not just Amazon breaking into this year’s pack: there are newer faces to be wary of from Cinemax’s The Knick, which picks up a welcome nod for Clive Owen, to The CW’s Jane the Virgin.

The film race clearly marks out the expected awards contenders, from Birdman and Boyhood to Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game and Selma. While many are unavailable on VOD, both Ida and Leviathan are in competition for Best Foreign Language FIlm, each released day-and-date digitally in the UK – a sign of how important VOD is for making such acclaimed titles available to a wider audience.
