RIP James Gandolfini

James Gandolfini passed away yesterday at the age of 51. The giant of the big and little screen, he was most famous for his role in The Sopranos, but moved, amused and shocked in equal measure in a whole range of films, from Crimson Tide and Where The Wild Things Are to In the Loop and Get Shorty. He simultaneously stole scenes and blended in. Whatever the role, he felt like a natural fit – even as a giant furry monster with teeth, eyes and a preoccupation with the end of the world.
“I don’t even know what comes after dust,” he mumbles, trudging up sand in Where the Wild Things Are. It’s a deep comment for a kids film that speaks volumes about Big Things, but does so in such a tiny way – a growl communicated with a whimper.
It’s sad to think that natural presence won’t be on our screens anymore.
These are the films of his that are currently available on Netflix UK. Like his career, it’s wonderfully diverse and, tragically, way too short.
