Whether it’s the release of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, starring Daniel Radcliffe, or the opportunity to catch the unseen original series made by the short-lived Quibi a few years ago, one question we increasingly get asked is how to get The Roku Channel in the UK.
What is The Roku Channel?
The Roku Channel is an app grown by, well, Roku – the company that manufactures streaming sticks and boxes, as well as smart TVs. The Roku Channel is an ad-supported app that streams thousands of movies, TV episodes and documentaries without the need for a subscription.
Launched in 2017, it has grown to reach an estimated 80 million people in Q4 2021 and become one of the top five most-used channels on Roku devices in the US in Q2 2022. With the Quibi titles now acquired and rebranded as Roky Originals, the channel now features a line-up of more than 80,000 free movies and programmes, with titles licensed from more than 250 partners. In 2021, half of its 10 most popular on-demand titles were Roku Originals.
How do I get The Roku Channel?
The Roku Channel is built into all Roku devices, serving as a way to boost their market appeal among those looking to pick up a box or stick that will turn their TV into a Smart TV.
However, you don’t need a Roku device or Hisense Roku TV to get The Roku Channel. It is also available on Sky Q, Amazon Fire TV and NOW TV devices and Samsung TVs. You can also download the Roku: Official Remote Control app on iOS and Android devices – The Roku Channel is available for free within that app. (In the USA, you can also stream The Roku Channel in a web browser at therokuchannel.roku.com – but this is not currently available in the UK.)
