This month on MUBI
My First Film – 6th September
From writer-director Zia Anger comes a raw, experimental multimedia portrait of a young filmmaker that redefines the boundaries of visual storytelling. A sincere cinematic ode to the creative process, My First Film follows Vita (Odessa Young), an inexperienced young filmmaker, as she recounts her turbulent foray into filmmaking 15 years prior. A semi-autobiographical feature starring her best friend Dina (Devon Ross), the lawless production reaches a fever pitch when an unexpected pregnancy thrusts the director into the role of creator in ways beyond the film itself.
A Most Violent Year – 6th September
1981, one of New York City’s most violent years on record. The life of respectable businessman and immigrant Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac) and his wife Anna Morales (Jessica Chastain) is jeopardised when Abel becomes the target of the corrosive crime syndicates ruling the city. He refuses to buckle and takes matters into his own hands.
Gloria – 13th September
Sebastián Lelio’s 2013 drama follows an ageing Chilean divorcée who refuses loneliness and ardently seeks love amongst a shaky political backdrop.
Fish Tank – 20th September
Andrea Arnold’s absorbing kitchen sink drama is something you’ll want to stare into for hours.
Winter’s Bone – 20th September
A cold and bleak modern mystery, Winter’s Bone is a frostbitten pleasure.
The Assistant – 20th September
This quietly powerful #Metoo drama makes for taut and uncomfortable viewing.
Humpday – 27th September
Enter the irreverent world of the late Lynn Shelton with this uproarious 2009 mumblecore comedy, which finds two old college friends reuniting after many years apart, only maturity has not removed their sprightly obsession with one-upping each other. This time they may have taken it too far, as the heterosexual duo find themselves committed to a challenge that takes their friendship to a new height: they must enter an amateur porn contest together.
Sword of Trust – 27th September
In Lynn Shelton’s final film, Cynthia (Jillian Bell) inherits a sword from her late grandfather, attached to which is his detailed report attempting to prove that the South won the Civil War. Joining forces with a motley duo who run a pawnshop, Cynthia joins them with her partner and attempts to sell the contentious sword and inevitably invites chaos to the store.
The Fall – 27th September
In 1920s Los Angeles, a bedridden stuntman spins an elaborate, fantastical tale for a young girl as they both recover from accidents in a hospital. As the girl’s imagination blends with the stuntman’s story, the lines between reality and fantasy blur to reveal an escapist sanctuary for their emotional wounds. From the visionary mind of Tarsem Singh comes an audacious fusion of epic fantasy and intimate drama about the power of imagination starring a then-unknown Lee Pace. Filmed over a period of four years across 24 countries, this cult classic is now newly restored in 4K.
The Nature of Love – 27th September
Monia Chokri’s Québécois-based 2023 drama follows Sophia, a middle-aged philosophy professor who lived peacefully with her partner Xavier for over 10 years. Upon inviting a craftsman, Sylvain into her home for renovations, Sophia’s foundations are shaken to their core, and she is forced to contend with unabating pangs of passion never felt prior. Winner of 2023’s Best Foreign Film at the César Awards.
