From a Powell and Pressburger season to a David Lean retrospective, here’s what’s new and coming soon to MUBI:
This week on MUBI
Great Expectations – 5th September
MUBI begins a David Lean triple with arguably the definitive adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic.
Munich – 6th September
One of Spielberg’s most underrated films, this 2005 thriller follows five men, who are chosen to hunt down and kill the Palestinian terrorists responsible for taking 11 Israeli athletes hostage and murdering them following Munich’s 1972 Olympics.
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp – 7th September
MUBI’s Powell & Pressburger season continues with one of their many masterpieces: the 1943 portrait of General Candy, a veteran officer now out-of-touch with the war, whose career is unearthed through a series of flashbacks, including his relationships with three different women (Deborah Kerr).
If… – 8th September
Malcolm McDowell stars in Lindsay Anderson’s 1968 film that charts an allegorical revolution by the pupils in an old private school in England. The first of a back-to-school double-bill.
Pretty Persuasion… – 9th September
MUBI continues its back-to-school double-bill with Marcos Siega’s divisive Sundance hit, which stars Evan Rachel Wood as a teenage girl who incites a media frenzy when she accuses her teacher of sexual harassment.
Coming Soon
The Odd Couple (1968) – 10th September
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are on unbeatable form in this classic comedy about two divorcees who share an apartment.
Man on Wire – 11th September
This documentary explores Philippe Petit’s preparations for historically walking across a high wire between New York’s Twin Towers. The feat itself is gripping to watch – but even more mind-blowing is director James Marsh’s ability to show you what happened that day without using a single piece of video footage. Read our review
Oliver Twist – 12th September
MUBI’s David Lean season continues with this timeless take on Charles Dickens’ classic novel.
10,000km (Long Distance) – 13th September
Carlos Marques directs the excellent Natalia Tena in this 2014 Spanish film, which sees a couple try to maintain a long-distance relationship between Los Angeles and Barcelona. Tena and her co-star David Verdaguer both earned Goya award nominations for Best New Actor.
I Know Where I’m Going – 15th September
MUBI’s Powell and Pressburger retrospective continues with their 1945 romantic comedy, starring Wendy Hiller as a headstrong young woman who travels to the remote Scottish Hebrides to marry a rich lord.
Obsession – 16th September
With Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s documentary De Palma hitting UK cinemas on 23rd September, MUBI takes us back to one of Brian’s best: Obsession, which follows a New Orleans businessman dealing with the death of his wife and daughter in a botched kidnap rescue attempt, borrowing more than a little from Hitchcock along the way.
A monthly subscription to MUBI costs £5.99 a month, with a 30-day free trial.
