Warning: This contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 1.
“We’re really on the other side of the looking glass now, aren’t we?” That’s Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in the new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery, as CBS’ reboot of the classic TV series puts the USS Discovery on a collision course with more familiar Star Trek canon.
Because yes, Season 2 sees the introduction of Ethan Peck as Spock, the half-brother of Michael – and, at the same time, sees the Discovery intercept a distress call from the USS Enterprise, helmed by Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), the predecessor to James T. Kirk.
Together, they’re caught up in the hunt for some mysterious red signals across the space, which are somehow connected to Spock and have something to do with a mythical being called the Red Angel.
With emotional family drama, hunt-the-mystery-object suspense and a glimpse of Michelle Yeoh all on the cards, not to mention visions of the apocalypse, Season 2 promises a quest about sharing burdens, protecting the universe and boldly going into the unknown to fight for the future. So, business as usual, then.
Season 2 premieres on 18th January, with new episodes arriving weekly on Netflix UK, within 24 hours of their US broadcast.

Trailer: Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 set for January release date
7th October 2018
“Are you ready to execute this deeply insane plan of yours?” That’s the sound of Star Trek: Discovery returning for a second season – and a new trailer gives us a better glimpse of what’s in store for the crew of the USS Discovery. Specifically: Spock.
Yes, we get our first look at Ethan Peck in the iconic role of the half-human, half-Vulcan Science Officer of the USS Enterprise, as the Star Trek prequel collides with the series’ original canon.
“It was absolutely outrageous. It was a long audition process. In the beginning, I didn’t know what I was reading for and I knew this guy was struggling with emotion and logic. And towards the end of it, I found out who it was.. and I had a panic attack,” Peck told fans at New York Comic-Con, where the trailer was unveiled.
Spock’s arrival in the series follows the end of Season 1, which saw the USS Discovery intercept a distress call… from the USS Enterprise, helmed by Christopher Pike, the predecessor to James T. Kirk.
Anson Mount will play Pike, joining a cast led by Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who realises that the signals they’re trying to trace in the far reach of space are somehow connected to her half-brother,Spock.
“Chasing the signals is bringing in a classic episodic feel,” Mount told fans.
“This season is deeply emotional. It’s a deeply emotional story,” added Martin-Queen.
“The 7 signals, where they came from, who sent them… it’s really the drive of season two…. There’s a lot of interesting conversation about science vs faith… even Starfleet can’t really understand what they are, where they came from.”
What we also get from the latest trailer (along with a glimpse of Michelle Yeoh) is, finally, an official air date for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2: the series will return to Netflix UK on 18th January, with new episodes arriving weekly.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 trailer teases new stories and old faces
21st July 2018
“We have always looked to the stars to discover who we are,” begins the trailer for Star Trek: Discovery’s second season, which teases more new worlds and intergalactic mystery, as well as a dose of familiar characters and old-school mythology.
Warning: Spoilers for Season 1 follow.
That, of course, begins with the ending of Season 1, which closed with the USS Discovery intercepting a distress call… from the USS Enterprise, helmed by Christopher Pike, the predecessor to James T. Kirk.
Anson Mount wil play Pike, and he doesn’t waste any time positioning himself as the new man in charge in this trailer, which also sees Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) hint that the signals they’re trying to trace in the far reach of space are somehow connected to her half-brother, Spock.
The trailer also gives us a look at Tig Notaro, who joins as a new guest star, and brings a touch of lightness and humour to what became a surprisingly dark maiden voyage for the new Star Trek incarnation. Season 2 will have a new showrunner in the form of franchise veteran Alex Kurtzman, who replaced Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg earlier this year. He marks the third showrunner for the project, after Bryan Fuller exited during early production. While Fuller, of Hannibal fame, first proposed an anthology-like approach to CBS, it now looks like Kurtzman will be bringing that vision to life in the form of new shorter episodes.
These minisodes will air exclusively on CBS All Access, like the series itself, and will be called “Short Treks”.
Speaking at the show’s Comic-Con panel this weekend in San Diego, Kurtzman called them “an opportunity for deeper storytelling and exploration of key characters and themes that fit into… the expanding Star Trek universe”.
“There is no shortage of compelling stories to tell in the Star Trek universe that inspire, entertain, and either challenge our preconceived ideas or affirm long held beliefs, and we are excited to broaden the universe already with Short Treks,” added Kurtzman. “Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes. They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”
Episodes on the way include stories focused around Harvey Mudd (Rainn Wilson), Ensign Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), and Lieutenant Commander Saru.

The biggest news out of Comic-Con, though, is that Spock will actually appear in Season 2, and Number One will also join him. Number One was Pike’s second-in-command in the original pilot, but was replaced by William Shatner’s Kirk in the lead. Originally played by Majel Barrett (the wife of Gene Roddenberry), she’ll be played this time by Rebecca Romijn.
Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere in the UK on Netflix in early 2019. Here’s the trailer:
