The Tale to get UK release on Sky Atlantic this June

Jennifer Fox’s The Tale will be released in the UK on Sky Atlantic this week, we can confirm, following its UK premiere at Sundance London.
The story of one woman’s investigation into her own childhood memories, The Tale was one of the most powerful and talked-about films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Utah. After wowing audiences and critics with its pertinent, personal subject matter, it was selected to open Sundance London this week, screening at the Picturehouse Central on both Thursday 31st May and Saturday 2nd June.
Based on the director’s own experiences, it follows Jennifer, a journalist and professor who lives a happy life in New York City, until her mother finds a story she wrote at the age of 13 about a “special” relationship with two adult coaches. Investigating her memories and the truth behind them, the result is an exploration of her first sexual relationship and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive.
The film stars Laura Dern, Isabelle Nélisse, Jason Ritter, Elizabeth Debicki and Ellen Burstyn, with Dern’s performance praised and Fox’s honesty making for a landmark, important movie.
In a year when Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were notably absent from Sundance’s marketplace, with the streaming giant only snapping up a handful of titles – documentary prize winner Shirkers and animation White Fang – The Tale was acquired by HBO Films. It premiered on HBO in the US last week, and Sky, which has an exclusive deal with HBO, is not far behind: The Tale will premiere on UK TV on Tuesday 5th June, screening at 10pm on Sky Atlantic. It will then be available on-demand, following its broadcast.
Don’t have Sky? You can also stream the film live and on-demand on NOW, as part of a £7.99 Entertainment Membership. The monthly subscription includes streaming access to Sky Atlantic’s other shows, such as Game of Thrones, Westworld, Patrick Melrose and Billions, as well as FOX UK (Legion) and other channels. A 7-day free trial is available for new customers – for more information click here.
