Sanditon expands cast for Season 2
27th June 2021
Sanditon is expanding its cast for Season 2.
The Red Planet Pictures and MASTERPIECE drama, which is produced for MASTERPIECE PBS, BritBox UK and ITV, will return as a BritBox original in the UK, after Season 1’s debut on ITV in 2019.
Based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel – and developed by Andrew Davies – the series is a depiction of a developing Regency seaside town at the forefront of the great social and economic changes of the age. Season 1 saw a carriage accident introduce the young Charlotte Heywood to the Parker family, leading her on a journey from the only home she had ever known to the seaside idyll of Sanditon. Carried along by the enthusiasm of entrepreneur Tom Parker for the development of the once small fishing village into a fashionable seaside resort, Charlotte quickly found herself at the heart of a diverse and unexpected community.
Season 2 is developed by Justin Young (Death in Paradise, Ripper Street), who wrote four episodes of the first season of Sanditon and will take the role of lead writer and executive producer – with Davies also writing episodes and exec-producing. It will be set nine months after Season 1 and see a wave of new inhabitants join heroine Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) for her return to the picturesque coastal resort.
Rose Williams, Anne Reid, Kris Marshall, Kate Ashfield, Crystal Clarke, Jack Fox, Charlotte Spencer, Lily Sacofsky, Turlough Convery, Kevin Eldon and Adrian Scarborough are all confirmed to return as well as Williams.
In Season 2, Charlotte will soon attract the attention of not one, but two new men. And, in her last summer season before turning 21, Georgiana Lambe (Crystal Clarke), keen to forge her own identity, gets up to mischief in the name of love – but will she run the risk of being lonelier than ever before?
The Parkers are back, as Tom (Marshall) strives to rebuild Sanditon. But there are many unforeseen issues awaiting him, while the secrets and lies of the dysfunctional Denhams continue to rock the foundations of the sunny seaside town.
The Army arrives to make the resort their new base and with them bring potential new romances, friendships and challenges for the residents of Sanditon.
New characters this season include Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Industry), a mysterious resident with a complex family history, who is in stark contrast to self-assured war hero Colonel Francis Lennox (Tom Weston-Jones, Grace), his rival for Charlotte’s affections.
We also meet Charlotte’s spirited younger sister, Alison Heywood (Rosie Graham, Outlander), who comes to Sanditon to pursue her own romantic dream. Alison is soon acquainted with the handsome and charming Captain William Carter (Maxim Ays, Still So Awkward). Other intriguing newcomers include Captain Declan Fraser (Frank Blake, Normal People), a courageous character (if a little rough around the edges), and the striking and flamboyant Charles Lockhart (Alexander Vlahos, Versailles), a Byronic artist who arrives to paint portraits of Sanditon’s fashionable and wealthy residents.
Belinda Campbell, executive producer and joint Managing Director of Red Planet Pictures, says, “It’s a joy to be returning to the sunshiny shores of Sanditon in the company of such an incredible cast–including some very exciting new faces. Writer/Executive Producer Justin Young has plenty of fabulous adventures in store for all our characters. I can’t wait to see them come to life on screen.”
Filming is now under way, with Sanditon already renewed for a third season.
Sanditon returns for Season 2 and 3 on BritBox
13th May 2021
BritBox will be taking UK audiences back to Sanditon for a second and third visit, with the drama renewed for two more seasons.
The series premiered on ITV in 2019 and now, almost two years on, MASTERPIECE (where the show aired in the USA) has ordered two more seasons, with BritBox boarding the project as its UK partner. The seasons will then air on ITV after its initial premiere on BritBox UK.
Season 2 will continue to follow the high-spirited and independent Charlotte (Rose Williams, Curfew) as she returns to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon. Charlotte’s journey is one thread of an intricate tapestry of compelling stories full of intrigue, excitement, and romance. Against the backdrop of beautiful vistas, familiar faces return and new inhabitants are introduced — all of whom will be having adventures as joyous and surprising as the seaside town itself.
Justin Young (Death in Paradise, Ripper Street), who wrote four episodes of the first season of Sanditon, will develop the new seasons and take the role of lead writer and executive producer. Davies will also return to write several episodes and executive produce.
Belinda Campbell, Joint MD of Red Planet Pictures commented: “We’re thrilled to be able to invite viewers back to Sanditon for not just one but two further visits! Justin Young and Andrew Davies’ sensational scripts are relevant, timely and captivating and we can’t wait to share all the exciting new developments we have in store for our much loved characters. Now, more than ever, I think we could all do with some joy on our TV screens as well as a healthy dose of fresh sea air.”
Will Harrison, BritBox UK MD, added: “We couldn’t be happier to be involved in bringing the wonderful Sanditon back to screens across the UK, and want to thank the fans for keeping these characters alive while plans came together.”
Additional casting will be announced in the future, with filming expected to begin later this year in and around Bristol.
