What’s leaving Sky and NOW TV in October / November 2017?
David Farnor | On 20, Oct 2017
Halloween is in the air, and while you may be drawn to Stranger Things on Netflix, there’s nothing more disturbing than the thought of missing out on one of the last year’s other best shows.
From superheroes to life-like robots, October sees a bunch of top box sets depart from Sky TV. The looming exit of some greats on Sky Cinema is similarly spooky, whether you’re a fan of Pan, a lover of Ratatouille or just really like Grandma.
Not a Sky customer? You can get access to both Sky Box Sets and Sky Cinema through contract-free streaming service NOW, which costs £8.99 a month (for an Entertainment Membership, including Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, FOX UK and more), or £9.99 a month for the whole Sky Cinema catalogue. Whichever you subscribe to, this is your last chance to stream the following:
TV
Boardwalk Empire: Season 4 – 25th October
Atlantic City. The Dawn of Prohibition. A playground for Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), who runs things with a taste for illegal booze, violence and good hats.
Nashville: Season 5 – 25th October
Callie Khouri’s TV series follows a range of country singers in Nashville, Tennessee, grappling with guitars, gossip and fame. If you like your folk music, or just good drama, this is a must-see.
Westworld: Season 1 – 13th November
In a futuristic theme park staffed by artificial beings, guests can live out their wildest fantasies. However, when the ‘hosts’ begin to run amok, the guests find themselves in a world where anything can happen. Adapted from the Michael Crichton film by a team including JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan, and starring Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Thandie Newton, if you missed HBO’s sci-fi series last year, this is your chance to catch up before Season 2 next year.
DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow: Season 1 and 2 – 14th November
A rag-tag team of heroes and villains travelling through time to save the universe? Where do we sign up?
Supergirl: Season 1 and 2 – 14th November
DC’s female superhero show, starring Melissa Benoist, is uplifting, inspiring, and highly entertaining fun. If you’re tired of the male-driven blockbusters on the big screen, get this on your screen as soon as possible.

Movies
Ratatouille – 21st October
Brad Bird’s tale of a rat who wants nothing more than to be a chef in a Paris kitchen is a typically colourful Pixar affair.
Sister Act – 24th October
Whoopi Goldberg as a lounge singer pretending to be a devout nun to hide from Harvey Keitel? Sister Act’s premise may be a font of easy jokes, but they don’t miss a beat – helped by a killer soundtrack of Motown classics. Even better? You can now watch it with Sister Act 2, also on Netflix UK.
Joy – 25th October
Jennifer Lawrence reteams with fellow American Hustlers and Silver Linings Playbookers Bradley Cooper and writer-director David O. Russell for this offbeat biopic about Joy Mangano, the entrepreneurial young mother who made her fortune as the inventor of… the Miracle Mop.
Pan – 28th October
A rip-roaring romp crammed with derring-do, Joe Wright’s underrated Pan has enough spectacle, visual verve and ingenuity that one suspects J.M. Barrie would be watching with a big smile on his face.
Grosse Pointe Blank – 31st October
What have you been doing since you left high school? For John Cusack’s Martin Blank, the answer is easy: he kills people for money. George Armitage’s gun-toting comedy, which boasts stellar supporting turn from Minnie Driver, Alan Arkin and Dan Aykroyd, sees Cusack in his heyday, just after the winning Bullets Over Broadway and before The Thin Red Line and Con Air. Great fun.
Tokyo Tribe – 31st October
From the ever-prolific cult Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono comes Tokyo Tribe, an anarchic hip-hop musical about gang warfare that needs to be seen to be believed.
When Harry Met Sally – 31st October
You can never enough of what she’s having
Grandma – 3rd November
“Where can you get a reasonably priced abortion in this town?” That’s the kind of grandmotherly advice you can expect from Elle (Lily Tomlin). 76 years of age, she’s not afraid to say what she thinks – even in sweetest of situations. So when her granddaughter, Sage, turns up pregnant on her doorstep, what follows is an 80-minute jaunt around town to raise funds. This is funny, feisty and surprisingly feel-good.
Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie – 12th November
This new take on Charles Schulz’ creations may not look quite right, but the familiar Peanuts humour is present and correct in this colourful animation.
