The 1929 short by Luis Buñuel is a surreal masterpiece, with its subversive, iconic images influencing cinema for decades as well as coming to define the surrealist movement.

Bread
Stanley Long directs this 1971 story about a group of hippies given permission to paint a young aristocrat’s house while he’s away – and decide to host a pop festival in the estate’s grounds instead. Cult British rock bands Juicy Lucy and Crazy Mabel both appear.
The Man Who Lies
Alain Robbe Grillet’s 1968 film follows a mysterious stranger who arrives in a French village claiming to be an friend of a late local hero. War, memories and myths all collide as nothing appears as it seems.
The Phantom of the Opera
Lon Chaney stars in this landmark Universal horror film, which is the first ever screen version of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel. Accompanied by Carl Davis’ 1996 score, performed by the Prague Philarmonic Orchestra.
Sanjuro
BFI Player+ continues to build its collection of all-you-can-stream Akira Kurosawa with his 1962 comedy, which sees a ronin run rings around nine young samurai.
Little Malcolm
John Hurt stars in this dark comedy from Stuart Cooper about a revolutionary who leads his Party of Dynamic Erection in a battle against an unseen nemesis. Backed by George Harrison, the film was based on the stage play by David Halliwell.
Uncle Silas
Charles Frank helms this 1948 Gothic chiller, which is based on J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel and stars Jean Simmons as an heiress pursued by her uncle and his perverted son.
Tiger Bay
A young girl witnesses a murder in Tiger Bay, only to become friends with the killer and protect him from the cops.
